82 Aspencade Brake Rotors! So fun!!

Post by TheFieryMan »

Ok I take it back. Not fun at all.

I've had the bike for a couple years now but being out of the country most of that time, I've had to wait to do the various maintenance required. Now it's brakes.

Got all the appropriate caliper rebuild kits (although that's doubtful now as well) but when I went to check the rotors I found very interesting things. On the rear rotor, it's only 7mm left which according to Honda is 2 mm past the wear life. So I check the fronts and that's where it gets interesting.

On the front I've got one sold (thin) rotor and one vented. Giant face palm. Both are past their respective wear limits. So looks like I'm replacing all three. Triple face palm. Thanks previous owner.

After some research it looks like the GL1100 Aspencades are a bit unique compared to all others. Spacers for the front, vented vs solid rotors, one-off rear caliper etc. So, I need help from the experts.

1. I want to do the correct width vented fronts but don't want to pay double what I paid for the whole bike. Is there any vented alternatives out there?

2. Why does the parts manual diagramhttps://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda ... ront-wheel show four different part numbers for front rotors? (11, 13, 14, 15) Three different styles?

3. I got the exact same caliper rebuilt kit for all three calipers including the pistons but now I'm reading that the rear is different pistons??

4. I should also note that this is now a Naked Aspencade so it's not nearly as heavy as a normal one. Would it be cheaper to switch to the standard/interstate calipers and rotors?

Well I answered one of my questions above. Found both vented front rotors (L and R) from a 83 Aspencade with very little wear (9.8mm) for $70 on EBay so we will see what those look like when they arrive. I haven't started taking mine apart yet so I'm not sure if I will need new shims or not. With those, I'll at least be able to get the front working well and back to original running gear.

Remember there is no guaranty that all the brake parts are the original items. On bikes this old they have often been molested in the past with whatever got the job done.
Not to mention that 1100 brakes are all over the place, and you might even need to reference serial numbers to figure out what should have been fitted. If you are looking for a true restoration you have your work cut out for you. However, if you are not concerned about an exact match, you may want to explore what parts are readily available and swap the whole system to things that are easy to get.

As said above, the 1100's brakes are "all over the place." 80-81's all models are the same; rotor is #15 on the parts diagram, no left or right, with single piston calipers.
'82 went to dual piston calipers all around, with matching master cylinders and different rotors, with the Aspencade having vented front rotors, and IIRC, the front calipers are wider to accommodate that. Rear rotor is not vented, IIRC. Both front and rear master cylinders are one year only.
'83's all had one 'linked' front and rear brake, so master cylinders don't interchange, and one front caliper has a smaller piston than the other. Aspy's also had the vented rotors...
The 'spacer' or 'shim' (#12 on the diagram?) is actually paper. It's probably missing and it's no longer available. You can make one out of thin gasket material. From what I've read, it does help reduce brake squeal.
Good luck; I hope you get it all sorted out!

The new to me front rotors will be arriving today. I'm thankful I've had a decent rear brake till now. I will make a post in my project thread with pictures etc when I start working on it.

Im having trouble finding accurate specs on the disc thickness for the rear rotor on the 1982 Aspencade. When searching for this disc I see a LOT of options for discs which replace the 43120-MB9-870 but they all say they measure 7mm thickness. Im seeing that the rear rotor thickness should 9.9mm - 10mm for the rear. (front too actually but they are a different style completely). The 10mm thickness is what Im seeing from people posting the wear tolerances but im not sure if its for 82 or 83.
