Hi all. Its been a while since i've been here. I am having some issues keeping my battery from draining after a few days. It all started after riding home 2 hours in a rain storm. The bike received a new battery and i rode 2 hours with it. It then sat for about 2 weeks while I was on vacation. Once I got back the bike started fine and I rode 2 hours home in the rain. After this the bike sat for about 3 days and after which the bike would not start. The battery was drained. I charged it and then it started fine. Went on a trip down to vermont for 2.5 hours spent the night and came back no problem. Then the bike sat for a week and the battery can't be detected by the smart charger. I force charged it running in parallel with another battery and it starts again.
Any ideas what could be causing the drain? Could the rain have shorted something out?
Also on a different note my oil pressure and neutral lights don't work. This started before the battery drain issue so not sure if they are related.
I did have some issues with my fuel level and temperate gauge not working so I change out my voltage regulator. Excited to test that out now but I don't want to put the bike back together if I need to take it apart for troubleshooting.
Any good first places to check? Thanks!

Re: Battery drain issue and missing neutral light
Charge the battery and put a multi meter on amps pull the pos or neg cable (leave one connected) and hook up one lead to the battery and one to the disconnected cable you should have no amp draw unless there is a radio or clock but it should be very little a clock maybe 100Ma and radio memory the same. 4-5 hundred Ma is getting into a drain territory or without a clock or radio anything at all.
With it connected start unplugging block connectors start with the generator wires the 3 yellow left of the battery if any plug drops the draw then trace it further along the wire.

Okay I ran the test without my fairing on. With the key off its 0.06mA draw and with the key on its 5.6 mA. So I am guessing what ever is pulling the current is coming from my fairing (radio, gauge lights, clock, volt meter)?

Re: Battery drain issue and missing neutral light
On my 1100I the clock will drain the battery enough in 2-3 weeks to make the bike hard to start. It shouldn't happen in only a few days, but as the battery goes thru more of these deep discharge cycles, it will quickly take a toll on battery life.

OK I forgot to mention no key on since we are looking for a ignition off drain or do you mean faring off and on? Figure a way to keep the meter connected and start disconnecting plugs, did you try the 3 yellow wire one left of the battery?

I'll test it with the fairing on shortly. I did notice on my ride last night i had the radio set to on (just bearly on) so no volumn but power. I assume the radio shuts off when the key is off though. Could that be it?

If it's an OEM setup, it should power off except for a minimal draw for memory. If it's an aftermarket unit, it would depend on how it's been wired. IMhO, any aftermarket add-ons would be suspect.

It's OEM. I do think my wiring needs a good cleaning I think there is a lot of resistance from corrosion there that might be causing more power drain. I know my fueses get hot too. I'll have to keep checking when I have a bit more time

Re: Battery drain issue and missing neutral light
Fuses getting hot isn't good... which reminds me that the first 1100I I rehabbed had issues with a melted fuse block. It was barely noticeable from the top, but when I opened it up, it was pretty scary. I ended up replacing the block. I can't say a similar situation would cause your symptoms, but it's quite possible. It does sound like the wiring harness needs some TLC in any case.
