1983 aspencade rear wheel rubbing

Post by winguyjo »

resurrecting a 1983 aspencade that has the rear wheel rubbing against the brake stay. on the other side i can slip a 9/32" drill bit between the properly inflated, 140/90/16 stock size tire and the swing arm. on my 1980 parts bike the gap on that side is 1/2".

what's going on ? where has all my tire clearance gone ? something may reveal itself as i dig in deeper but, in the meantime, if you see a problem somewhere in these pics, please let me know.

thanks
joe

I have hear certain brands are a bit wide on the edge but something caught my eye is that bushing going into the wheel fully seated? and there should be no washers on either side of it also you do have the sleeve on the swingarm side of the caliper bracket right? I was comparing it to this pic and yours seem like it is standing out a bit more.

thanks biguns, that spacer is one of my prime suspects. doesn't seem to be recessed far enough into the hub. will see what's up when i get things apart.

back to this ... i pulled things apart and this is what i found : if i remove that spacer (not the one on the left side of the wheel; it is fine and seated properly) ... everything is good ... the spacer i am talking about is on the right side of the wheel and i have shown it removed, and as it was mounted on the axle ...

with that spacer gone, you can see that the final drive is sitting closer to the wheel hub (by 1/4") and it looks more correct that way. the wheel now spins free and true and with no noises. previous owners can get up to some crazy stuff but i wonder why he would introduce a spacer that seems to not belong there and would cause the wheel to rub against the brake stay as it was. there is now an equal amount of tire clearance on both sides. none of the parts drawings for any year/model of gl1100 show that spacer in there. i am calling it a fix unless someone points out something off-base here. thanks for reading.

I wonder if it is identical to the left side spacer someone put it in there then thought they needed 2. It sounds like your good to go.

hey, biguns ... i figured it out, thanks to a youtube video ... it goes on the left side, between the swing arm and the caliper bracket. the reason i couldn't find it on a parts diagram is because i was looking under "final drive" and "rear wheel". i eventually found it listed under "rear brake caliper". big thanks to "tom asay" for an excellent youtube video which set things straight. going from the parts diagrams, it's only used on the 1982 and 1983 models.

thanks for following along and providing some feedback; much appreciated.

looking at your pic of wheel , at rear brake it does not look right and those two spacers go together at the disc brake side they are a pain I always take a pic before I take them apart and there are swing arm adjustments two rubber plugs rear frame remove them then you can adjust swing arm side to side

Correct - if you look at my How to remove and replace your rear wheel tutorial, you can see that spacer goes on the left, and not on the right:
