Red wire from fuse box acc to main harness?

Post by Ryeguy »

I have an 81 interstate original 22,000 km and has been parked since 1986 2 owners
Upon stripping the bike for a rebuild I see this red wire someone in the past over landed from the main harness (splice in the key switch red wire)
To the positive on the fuse block for ACC…
Anyone have an idea on why ?
Or have seen this on other wings
Pictures show the positive terminal of the acc terminal with the blue crimp on ring
Terminal and other picture shows a splice connector with the other end of the red wire into the large red wire for ignition

Those tap connectors are always bad news. They often cut a bunch of strands in the original wire and let in moisture. I would remove all the accessory add on wiring, and start over. Solder and shrink that red key switch wire after the tap is removed if the wire is damaged. Wiring accessories to the accessory terminal is the right way for small loads under 5 amps. For anything larger use a relay fused from the battery and switched by the accessory terminal. You can buy a power distribution box or build your own. What accessories are you looking to power?

Not looking to power anything just trying to figure out why someone
Would run a wire like this.
As to getting info if it’s “normal” im new to goldwings don’t know if this is a thing people
Did because of bad harness’s on these old wings that’s all otherwise I’m going to remove it and get rid of that splice connector
Those are garbage

No, Honda did a pretty good job with the wiring on these bikes. I can't say the same about the owners. Plenty of bad wiring out there. I think some just guess until their new chrome doodad lights up and call it job done. The ignition switch does have a history of getting water damage, and sometimes needs removal and cleaning. At one time Honda offered just a replacement lower cover with contacts, as a repair kit, but I think that ended a long time ago. If the switch went bad someone may have jumped the accessory line to the ignition line as a quick fix. But that is just a guess. If you have the factory service manual, you can trace out the stock wiring and restore it to original condition, fixing whatever is broken along the way.

I'm suspecting they had a failure somewhere, and instead of diagnosing and fixing it properly, they just ran a new wire from the ACC terminal and hooked it where they expected the power to be.

I will echo my dislike for those "vampire taps" that cut into the wires, they are bad news - undo that mess and redo it properly (if you still need to).
