Running on 2 cylinders... 83 Aspy

Post by florida_ump » Sun Jul 31, 2011 10:33 am

... but not the combination you might think. My 83 Aspy only runs on two cylinders at start up; #2 and #4. Both RH cylinders are either dead, or very little output. I checked exhaust temp with my infra-red thermometer. #2, &4 both are in the 200-250 degree range, while #1, &3 stay just above ambiant, somewhere around 100-120. The bike runs OK down the road for about 20 minutes, then I have to keep 2K rpm in it to keep it running. I think I am losing a third cylinder when this happens. When I got home from the ride, I removed the false tank, airfilter and air box to get access to the coils and wires. To my surprise, I found the plenum full of raw gas!!. So to summarize; when the bike starts, only 2 & 4 are firing. After a bit of time, I lose #4. I have swapped coils side to side, and then wires side to side without effect. I have new plugs around, and have checked them on 1 & 3. Both have spark. With the raw fuel in the plenum, I am guessing that I have a stuck float. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Yeah, pull your carbs and rebuild them..set floats, get new float needs..OEM only, clean all jets and replace all o rings.

Quick fix if it's a stuck float hit it with a dowel..on the bowl it may shake it loose,

what did you come up with? i found similar problem with my 83 Aspencade. i think the front 2 cyl are not firing, possibly a bad coil or maybe the spark unit. not quite sure how to test the spark unit or coil. but the gas in the air chamber is a bummer. did you figure that out? any help would be appreciated. thanks :)
