Coolant type to use
I am replacing my water pump on 86 Interstate 1200. Can I use 50/50 universal coolant that says can be used for any vehicle, can be mixed with any color coolant, and has no silicates listed in ingredients? It is PEAK Global Lifetime Coolant with ingredients Water..Ethylene Glycol...Diethylene Glycol...Sodium Benzoate..Propietery inhibitor. It has a freeze point of -34 deg. and boiling point of 265 deg....I am a long way from a honda store and 7 bucks a qt is crazy anyway for honda coolant. HELP!! Thanks for the great info!!!

The consensus is that Honda Premix is ALWAYS safe , but that Peak Global is also silicate free and safe :

Yes $7 a quart is crazy ... but replacing a water pump is no picnic, either ...

Looks like Peak Global is going in. Just about ready to put front of engine with new Honda pump back on. It is a workout , and hope all goes well, but will be good piece of mind once done and on the road. It appears this is not the first replacement, as the old one had metal fins. 86 Interstate 1200. Wonder if previous owners used silicate anti freeze. Has 58,000 miles on it only. Thanks everyone for responding quickly to my posts!! It really helps while working on it, and get quick answers !! Couldn't do it without you guys, thanks.!

Re: Coolant type to use
I did a search online for coolant/antifreeze for my 1986 GL1200A and I found a Honda product. It does not say anything on the label about motorcycle use. It is Honda Genuine HG Extended LifeType2
formulated specifically for Honda and Acura vehicles. It says Non-Silicate/Non-Borate engine coolant. Formulate with deionized water. I know I have an aluminum radiator and have to use a Non-Silicate which this is. Can I safely use this coolant in my bike?.. Thank You

If it says silicate free, I guess you're okay.
I use Valvoline Asian blend, specified for Honda and a couple of other brands. It isn't long life, but my manual said not to use a long life formula. However, that book was written in the mid 80s so additives have may changed.
