The bars looks like "Eye Candy".
A needle gauge makes a swing without increments.
All in all, it's all approximation.

Also...
Install 3 different temp senders and you'll get 3 different readings.

God find Virgilmobile - went in to the shop and had a look at the new rad core, will make a difference to the operation of the bike. Will also look tomorrow when I pick it up as to how many of the passages were plugged. Will print out your post no compare it to how the bike should operate.

Cheers

not sure of temp ,, but my 86 on a 75 deg. f. day will run 3 bars almost continuous in traffic and red lights might go to 4 bars . 80 + days he runs with 4 bars on highway when in traffic he will go to 5 bars and that is when the fan turns on . I have never seen more than 6 bars and that is in high heat and traffic of course the fan running . don't remember seeing it past 4 bars on highway unless at higher speeds . compared to virgilmobile's temp diagram I think my gauge is running pretty much where it should be .. and am comfortable with the numbers ..

Mine basically runs like this also, only I've never seen 6 bars (even from brand new). So running 70mph, 2 up, 95 degrees F, it will pretty much stay on four bars, sometimes dips to 3. I'd think it would run hotter, like 5 bars and go to six and back. That's around the t'stat temp in bike. When it's 100 + it will change 4 up to 5 and back. Riding in city traffic the same 4 bars up to five and back down. Of course when it hits 5 the fan comes on and stays on till 4 bars show. Sometimes the fan comes on before the 5 bar shows and shuts down with the 3 bar (must just be on the edge of some temperature that causes it).

Another interesting item of note. Service manual I have is 1987, they eliminated the gauge to numbers reference. They still have the Ohms to temp. chart, but not gauge bars to temp. I wonder why? Maybe they changed the range. If they dropped the low temp and added a higher temp, that would just about match what mines doing.

One of our rides last year we seen every bar filled with HD's.
My girl took one of my Prose's and made her own.

you buy a HD to hop from bar to bar."
