87' goldwing GL1200 reassembly( jigsaw puzzle)

Post by earthbounding »

I'm trying to put an 87' GL120 limited w/fuel injection back together and get it running again.
It's already been taken apart from the front fairing back by someone else ( seat, wires, hoses, fuel tank, rear tire, brakes, trunk...) and i cant figure out how to hook up the last few parts.
the fuel pump wires had been cut and the ends are somewhere in the harness and i'm not sure where to look for them.
Does the fuel line out from the cut-off valve go straight to the fuel pump?
there’s a hose (with spring) that comes off the front of the fuel tank to the right side with a second hose and they connect to a chrome 4 way, what do the other two ends go to?

Do you have a shop manual or Clymer manual for the bike?
Seriously, I could never work on mine without the Clymer
manual. If you own a 'Wing, you deserve a manual.

Do have a Clymer manual, but all the hoses aren't shown in the illustrations, found a few photos on-line showing the hoses going behind the fuel pump cover....need a picture with the cover off so i can see how the hoses are connected.
Might have to take the front half of the bike apart to find the fuel pump relay to trace the wires to the cut ends to the fuel pump....

I thought that Honda only made the Limited Edition in 1985. Could be wrong, though.

Fuel injection was only '85 and '86. There should be a label on the steering stem detailing what bike you have.

Missed the year part, just knew was a fuelie ....
I'm trying to put an 87' GL120 limited
As pointed out, there was no '87 Fuel injected GL1200s, no Ltds, no SEis.

However, it is easy to tell an '85 Ltd from a '86 SEi .... '85 is Gold and the '86 is near White and very pretty!

That is unless of course ....... someone has put the bike together from 2 or more donors?

also have some wiring problems...
head light dims when i press the start button and wont turn the engine over.
engine cranks if i jump the contacts on the selenoid.
tail lights blink/flash when i flip the switch on the left side.
head light blinks when i turn high beam on.

Interesting project. The fuel line(s) hook up does not look like mine at all. There has been some mods done to accomplish something.

The basics are that the fuel line from the tank goes in the rear of the fuel pump through the shut off valve. There is no other hose running off this supply hose. The line from the front of the fuel pump goes over to the fuel filter- top I believe. The hose from the filter goes to the fuel manifold on the left side of engine. The FI system takes it for there.

Will check on this and post some pics for you when I return home.

Good luck. Cheers

Further to my last, the fuel supply from the tank is at the rear bottom of the tank. The hose from the tank should go directly to the shut off valve. The only time you need to use the shut off valve is when you do work on the fuel system, otherwise it can be left in the on position. My shut off valve was leaking so I took it apart, installed a new o-ring and put it back together - works well now.

Fro your description regarding starting, it would seem that the starter switch may need cleaning, or from the looks of the wiring, it is not wired correctly.

Th wires on the starter solenoid have been changed as well. More to follow when I get home and look at mine.

These are great bikes so don't give up.

the wiring harness, fuel tank, rear tire, and almost everything from front of the engine back was removed when i started.
I'm just guessing how the wires are supposed to be routed.
the previous owner/s repaired/changed the wiring at the starter, tail lights, speakers/audio, travel computer and fuel pump.
I cant find the two wires to the fuel pump(dont know what they look like).

there is a hose that comes off the front of the fuel tank and one from a sensor/valve? on the right side of the engine to a chrome piece , thought it might be a fuel return line......
