1986 GL1200A Rear Wheel Swap Out

Post by Wolf Rider »

Hi Members,
I'm a Newbie to this forum so please bear with me. I've been lurking as a guest for some time. I signed up weeks ago, but this is my first post.
I've searched the site and other references, but can't find an answer to my question. ( I hate it when a stupid question is asked that has been posted already adnaseum)
I have a 1986 GL1200A that I got real cheap and a 1984 GL1200 Interstate from my uncle.
I want to make one good daily rider out of the two. I'm putting the 1986 on the road with 90,000km (55,000 mi) and cannabilizing and parting out the 1984i 185,000 km.
The question is,
Can I put the 1984 GL1200i reaar wheel on the 1986 GL1200A ? I do not see any reason I can't unless I'm overlooking something.
Also, the rear end I'm replacing is wet with oil, so I suspect a diff leak. The one I want to put in is dry. Would this swap correct the diff leak assumimg there is still oil in the diff of the '84 ?
:?:

You'll have to keep the splined drive adapter together with the wheel it's mated to now as the '84/85 wheel and the '86/87 wheels differ in the area of that rear wheel bearing on the drive side.

Thanks CrystalPistol.
Does that mean the final drive geaar ratios are different?

No, GL1200 and GL1500 all have the same final drive ratio.
