fuel pump

Post by mekanic4755 »

I have lost power to my fuel pump, 84 1200A, have a manual but it does not show enough. I have power on the middle wire, with key on and ground ond one one, the other has nothing? Thanks Mekani

Assume I know just a little about this...
My gl1200 had a pulse type fuel pump... Not a continuous running pump.It would go thump. thump at a idle about every 15-20 seconds or so.
I also found that it gets power from a "relay" looking box with 3 wires...
Its not a real relay...Its a electronic control module..There's power feeding it and one wire hooks to a ignition coil...This is to stop the fuel pump when the ignition stops as in a stalled engine.
The interesting part is that the wire that feeds the pump never had continuous voltage...even when the bike was running....I actually probed the wire and watched it...The only time voltage appeared is when the pump pulsed or activated. Its a power load switch.
Soooo.should your pump have failed, you will never see any voltage on that wire.
I do suggest relieving any fuel pressure on the carb side and measuring resistance from the pump terminal....
Its just possible that the mechanical switch contacts under the cap need cleaning.
You can test the pump by applying power to its terminals...With no fuel to hold pressure and keep the switch open it should thump about 2 times per second.
