Gas tank vent ?

Post by Rusty Bike »

Hi folks. I changed the engine oil in my 86 GL1200SEi today mainly because the stick showed that the oil was over full! The oil did have somewhat of a gassy smell to it but this is Rotella T6 which I'm not real familiar with. The oil was up above the full line clear up to where the stick gets round. I am checking the oil after engine warm up, with bike on center stand and dip stick not screwed in as per Honda. Did I overfill it last summer, maybe??? Anyhow, I notice when I take of the gas cap there is a release of pressure, like opening a beer. Is this normal on the fuel injected bikes? I have searched the parts fich and find no vent line on the tank. Nor do I find any check valves between the tank and fuel pump. Is this gas cap supposed to be vented? There is a return fuel line that comes from a pressure regulator. I wonder if the fuel tank building up pressure is forcing fuel into the injectors, thru the cylinders, past the rings and into the oil sump. Is this possible? The bike has been on the side stand all winter and I have not had any problem with hydrolock. If the jugs were flooding I would think hydrolock might be experienced. The bike starts easily but does load up at idle some times, it runs strong once you blip the throttle and clear it's throat. What say you O Wise Ones? Thanks all...Rusty

First, I would never leave any bike on the side stand more than 1 day. Your putting 400-500lbs. on one 40 yr old bolt.
Injectors arnt like carbs where they can leak continually. But injectors can dribble some after the engine is shut down. If they dont shut off from dirt/bad seals. You could get a little "beer action" from the tank. Usually warm weather/low on gas. Change the oil and keep an eye on er Rusty.

So, you are saying the fuel tank is not vented? How would one know if the injectors were leaking? Yes, I will keep an eye on that oil. Thanks TC...Rusty

The only way I know for sure if they are leaking. Take them out and have them bench tested at an injector shop.
There may be a leak down test you can do with a home injector kit? Do some reading on it Rusty. Not sure.
