My 1985 GL1200 Aspencade

Post by Green Dragon1976 »

:D about a year ago I bought a beautiful '85 Goldwing Aspencade. The bike ran great when i picked it up and still does, only now it has this strange high pitched whirring noise coming from the rear of the bike while I ride. Also, I have currently had to park this baby because as i was taking an exit ramp that turned left in an overpass of the Interstate i was exiting a large chunk of the concrete was missing in the curve about 8 feet wide. I have only been riding for a little over a year, this bike was the first I have owned. the little bracket between the front forks just over the tire cracked when I hit this pot hole, I found this out the next morning when inspecting the bike.
The only other issue the bike has is of course cosmetics with the fairings been old and not well taken care of, in fact rather gruesomely treated, some have scratches and cracks, both mirrors have been broken off. A lot of the accessories, (radio, CB, Air compressor, Air Ride adjustment, Cruise Control, trip computer console over the tank etc.) are completely inoperable, only the main systems for riding (engine, lights, turn signals, electronic gauges all work). The bike now bottoms out on the back tire if anyone rides on the back passenger seat, and I only weigh 230lbs. so not an overly large guy.
I know my baby is in a world of hurt, and I have thought about just junking it, but its my first bike, it has awesome potential, and every bike owner I have talked to, two own bike shops, 1 is an avid Harley guy, and several are Triumph riders, all say i would be stupid for getting rid of this bike. I personally want to believe that and get this baby redone and back on the road. However I am a recently divorced, disabled vet, currently out of work with a bad back. So funds are tight and it will be a slow go. Any pointers, advice, leadership, videos, or any other help, would be deeply appreciated :?: :!: :| .

i have a beautiful 1987 Aspencade for sale in the wanted/for sale forum. Everything works, it has only 9500 miles and has been babied since I bought it. If you want to avoid the time and expense of fixing up yours, contact me. I am trying to put up photos but am having trouble doing so. If you contact me I will email some to you.

If you can load some pics of your bike that would be great in order to help a bit more. You also say a lot of things don't work. Is this due to wiring or fuses or just bad equipment. I would suggest making a list in order of priorities and start from there. Obviously riding condition should be first on the list. Then you can check Ebay and or Craigslist for parts as you have the money to fix her up. Fix her up one thing at a time. It may be slow but at least it will get done and you will have a nice bike after a while,
Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

I understand your problem, I was fortunate to get a 1200 that was in great shape. I've driven it for 3 seasons without any problems. I've only done minor maintenance, oIL changes, flush and fills etc. Hope you are successful in bringing the old girl back to her glory. You can sometimes find spare parts on ebay. Good luck.
