1985 GL1200L cruise control not working

Post by FLAGATOR3273 »

i have run the trouble shooting manual on the cruise and all seems ok. the led on the control unit is still not on and i still have no cruise when i try to set it.i really dont want to buy a used control unit to find out if it indeed is that and find out the used one does not work as well. is there anyone who repairs the control units?? can anyone give me any other suggestions that might help me with this problem??

I had a 1500SE with cruise, it worked intermittently, was frustrating. Went through troubleshooting with diagram, couldn't find anything. Was searching the forum, to see if anything else I could try. When I came across a thread of the clutch bushing being worn out and loose. The next time out for a ride (usually to work). I tried to set the cruise, didn't activate. Pushed the clutch lever forward and re-tried to set cruise, it engaged. A little research on this, and the clutch switch is part of the cruise dis-engage. I looked at the 1200L schematic and see that it is also part of the same circuit. It could be that simple, Next ride, try pushing clutch lever forward to maintain pressure on the switch and try to set the cruise. Also, read in another thread, that putting LEDs in the brake light position without the load resistor will cause the cruise not to engage. Something about the ground reference to the control wasn't there. But there was a fix for it within the thread.
Hope that helps.

Here is a picture of an old and new clutch lever bushing that I changed on my '85 LTD:

This bushing also changed when the clutch engaged/disengaged. I have read on this and other forums where the clutch MC push rod wore through this bushing and the bike was immediately out of service.

Good luck. Cheers
