Need advice on 1986 Aspencade SEi

Post by rookiebiker »

My dad purchased his Goldwing Aspencade SEi in 1987 and was an avid rider until falling ill in 2003. He converted the bike to a trike around 1997. It has been sitting in his garage since 2002. If I replace the battery and can somehow get it started, is it safe to ride it to the shop for tuneup, maintenance, etc... or is it safer to load it on a trailer and take it there? Just don't want to do any damage to it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Under no circumstances should you start the bike or even try to crank the engine until the timing belts have been changed. Having sat in one position for 15 years, and who knows how old they were at that point, the chance of breakage is high, which can destroy the engine. The tires are also not going to be safe to ride on, and should be replaced before you ride it.
