Picked up an 84 Aspencade about 3 months ago. It had been sitting for about 4-5 years. It was in sad shape. I was considering parting it out however once I got it running it I decided to keep it, fix it up and use to commute to property I own about 400 miles away every couple of weeks or so to mow and clean. I own several newer bikes that I'd like to keep the high miles off of so this bike fits the bill just fine.

It runs perfect, charges the battery at a consistent 14.5 volts, burns no oil and only loses about (maybe) 100-200cc's of coolant every 1000 miles. Problem: At 70-80 mph on the interstate the temperature gauge usually stays about one "notch" above the notch in the white area....just about perfect. However, slowing down for city stop and go it will often go to the far side of 3/4's of the white part. I have ridden it around and parked it idling for about 15 minutes and the temp gauge will climb to just shy of the red....and stay there. It doesn't necessarily overheat but I haven't tested it during any 100º days yet either. There appear to be no faults or problems with the overall cooling system. No leaks, the fan kicks on at about halfway up the white part of the gauge. My best guess is that the cooling fan is old and does not turn over with the same efficiency as it did when it was new. Is this possible ya think?

Also, are there any high performance upgrades that anyone would be willing to share? Is there a high performance fan or an alternative that anyone has any experience with?

It could be in need of a thorough cleaning out of the cooling system, including the radiator, as it could have got furred up from sitting, especially if not filled with decent anti-freeze and de-ionised water. It could need a new thermostat as the original may well be stuck. The water pump may not be pumping properly. The pressure cap for the coolant may not be sealing properly. A head gasket may be leaking.There shouldn't be ANY coolant loss if everything's working correctly, so you need to establish if the coolant is leaking out or is going into the motor (head gasket).
Of course there is the possibility that the gauge is not reading correctly and the motor is not getting too hot at all! ;)

You can remove and service the fan motor. Not hard at all. I had to do the same on my 76. Made a huge difference in fan speed.

I'm not ruling out the possibility of a leaking head gasket however, the nature of it's heat cycles simply lead me to believe that the fan is simply not efficiently moving air in stop and go traffic. Question: Does anyone know the current draw on these fans? How about the CFM flow? The point I am getting at is given the advances in computer fans and the like since 1984, it is likely that someone could build or fabricate a series of smaller fans that would more efficiently move air. Anybody got any ideas?
