GL1200 Windshield Garnish Trim - how to attach?

Post by Ed Fleming »

Hi,
I recently bought an 85 GL1200 Interstate. The windshield trim molding is coming off, and in looking at it, I cant figure out how it is supposed to attach near the mirrors. I looked at some pics on ebay that show a hole in each end, but mine is damaged apparently. Even so, what goes through the hole in the end? When I took off the right mirror, there doesn't seem to be anything there to mount the molding on. I've attached some pics of the molding, and also a clip from an image off ebay. Thanks for your help!

If I remember correctly one of the bolts that hold the mirror on go threw those holes on each side. You may have to remove the mirror to see and fit. There should be a round thin bar on the front of the bike that attaches to the lower half of the trim.

Absolutely correct, you have to take the mirrors off to remove/replace the windshield/front trim piece.

This trim is secured by the upper bolt on the mirrors.

Many Thanks, everyone. I'll take a look at the mirrors. I will be needing a replacement molding too, since the ends are mangled.

If the majority of the garnish is in "good" shape, you could probably easily pop rivet a small piece of aluminum to the mangled end, and shape it, bend it to fit , and drill it to "do the job "

The garnish is not under a lot of stress, and the centre clip does most of the holding down for the garnish . The end holes are to align it and to hold the ends "in" against the windshield.

( I once drove about 400 miles with a loose garnish , and t was still there at the end of the day )
