It is going to need work. Make an offer below what you are willing to pay, come up if required to what you are willing to pay, and stay firm on what you are willing to pay. Offer half, split the difference, never know.

Many have done exactly this and there are still issues. Any used bike of this age requires a good going over. Brakes to ensure that the calipers are free to float - the pivot pin is notorious for never being looked at and seizes after time. Change the brake and clutch fluids, also overlooked as one or two year maintenance items - lots of crud will build up in the master cylinders and clutch slave as well. Remove the rear and inspect the drive train splines - use a high moly content grease/paste on install. Check the final drive pinion joint for play, pinion bearing may need to be replaced, takes a lot of torture so to speak.

Look at the bearings, wheel, swing arm and steering stem. Wouldn't hurt to look at the bearing races and inspect for wear marks. If there are wear marks on the race(s) consider new.

Electrical issues are interesting. The three yellow stator wires are a common item. People have found issues with bad dog bone fuses, recommended to replace. One fellow found that the previous owner had substituted the starter solenoid dog bone fuse with a piece of solid copper wire, never know what you will find.

Having mentioned all this there is more; however, once the kinks are worked through you will have a great bike. Read a thread by another GW owner and he has a policy that the purchase, getting the bike roadworthy and on the road was to be in a budget of $3000.00 USD and he is apparently quite successful with this approach.

Another issue is that you should be handy at wrench turning. Finding a shop to work on these older GWs is not that easy, and may not even be available to you.

If the bike is cosmetically in good shape, and you like it, make an offer. Never know, might get lucky and have it accepted.

Just my humble opinion.

Thanks Again Rednaxs60 8-)
Gives Me More To Think About & Consider :!: :?:
Cheers

Also,
I Apologise Tire Joe :(
I Didn't Thank U Earlier, I Only Responded N Gest About Saving A Wing! :?
I Was Thinking I Would Split The Difference Between A Non Running Bike & Repair Cost!? ;)
But, It Sounds Like Repairs Would B Far Greater Than The Cost Of The Bike Initially
Cheers

I often go to Nada.com site plug in year make model for motorcycles then based on the condition as poor fair good very good, use it as a base reference and also see what the asking prices are on Craigslist in your area to get a general idea. Really depends a lot on condition. If you can' t hear it run start deducting, if you can' t ride it more comes off....get the idea? Example that bike in my area fair condition $560, good $1335 very good $2810. But it always comes down to what you are willing pay.

If you want to consider an 87 Aspencade in excellent condition I have one that is waiting for a new owner. See mine in the for sale forum. It is all original and only has 9800 miles. New tires and new fork seals since I got it 3 years ago. I bought an 1800 last year and my 1200 is looking for a good home. I am only 2 hours away from you. I have it priced based upon the vintage price in excellent condition. It is ready to ride now if you don't want the hassle of buying a bike and starting to rebuild.

THANKS EVERYONE :!: :!: :!:
Went & Looked @ The GW & It Was Strapped 2 A Trailer On It's Kickstand (Not Main) FILTHY As All Get Out, Towed From Iron Mountain, MI
Down 2 Jackson, MI Open Air (NOT COVERED) & Was Covered N At Least A Quarter Inch Of Road YUK
As It Turns Out It Was Stored N A Pole Barn With A Dirt Floor So, Anything & Everything That Could Rust Or Corrode Did Just That, A Ton Of Rust & Corrosion
It Actually Sat Idle 4 18 Long Months :!:
I Unstrapped It And It Wouldn't Move @ All (Rear Brake Was Locked Up) :!:
Managed 2 Wiggle The Bike Enough 2 Get It N2 Neutral (Was N 1st) :?:
Turned On The Key & The Battery Was Dead As A Door Nail Of Course :?
No Power N The Storage Unit So, Of Course Jumper Cables From The Car 2 The Bike & NOTHING
So, I Pulled The Plugs, Sprayed WD-40 N2 The Cylinders & Waited A Bit 2 C If The Battery Would Take A Bit Of A Charge, Of Course It Did Not :o
No Matter What I Did The Bike Wouldn't Do A Thing When I Hit The Start Button :x
So, I Went Directly 2 The Starter Terminal @ The Starter & She Cranked Freely :D
Put The Plugs Back N & Tried 2 Start Her With The Start Button & Nothing, Then @ The Starter & She Would Only Do A VERY Slow Crank, Not Crank Fast Enough 2 Start :o
I Told The Woman (Was Her Father's Bike That Had Past Away) She Would Have 2 Buy A Battery 4 It 2 B Able 2 Proceed Any Farther & She Said "I Don't Have The Money @ This Time" So, We Said Or Goodbye's & That Was That :o
Again,
Thanks 2 U All 4 Ur Advice :D
