Check for a bad ignition switch- if it has spent time in rain or a very damp/humid location, those copper contacts could be poor enough that it could cause the symptoms you describe. It certainly sounds like an intermittent electrical issue. Bad connection somewhere. I'd also get looking at any plugs that have to do with the ignition. May be corrosion there too.
There is a DIY on here that shows an ignition switch being refurbished.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Maybe coil(s) are cracked? Cold they'll be fine and open when warm.
Spark Plug wire ends tight? The carbon type tend to deteriorate over time.

Vapor Lock? Dust builds up on older bikes and can retain heat.
I see you have the 86, is it Fuel Injected? Fuel pressure checked? Doubtful but might need injectors looked at.
I'm hounded for posting helpful solutions? ARGO!!! (2012 film)

Wow, that could take a while to diagnose. Even on some cars I've had it can be very frustrating. It almost has to be an electrical issue from what you've described. Almost have to check every electrical connection on that bike , including all grounds , gauges, wire harnesses. etc.. How long does it run before it shuts down ?

If I had to take a guess at it, I would say to check the starter and kill switch on the right side of the handle bars. Although I don't have the same issue as you, My 83 has an issue starting some times and I have to play around with the switch.
