Morning and Thanks...New to Forum

Post by mikeanw »

MORNING ALL;

New to the forum.

Picked up an 85 Aspencade. Spent last evening searching and reading. Lots of great info!!!!! Thanks to all for the contributions and great reads.

With your collective support i've managed to fix my fuel pump and remove the lower front fairing(s).

Now tackling a single float bowl that seems to be sticking!! 1!!!!!!!! should be entertaining.

Has her lit up, everything seems to be working. Needs a new front master cylinder (on order) and a new seat cover and brakes (on order as well) Will do the tires when the wheels are off.......from my reading it seems the back wheel is a treat.

Anyway!! Thanks to all again..

M

Welcome from the other coast. Great bikes, you will enjoy it. The bike will also keep you hopping with work and maintenance - it is after all a 33 year old bike. Do you have the manuals, PM sent.

Good luck

Best I can give is to come up with a work/maintenance plan - small chunks - do the work, put the bike back together then ride and enjoy. Repeat.

Small work packages keep you focused and you don't have so much to remember when it comes to putting the bike back together. Also keeps you from going down the proverbial rabbit hole and never finishing anything. Be selective in the tools you need and buy. Buying a set because it appears to be a good deal generally results in an accumulation of tools you never use. Being selective also lets you buy better quality tools as well.

Mike :
Welcome to the forum !!
You are now a member of the FCW club ( Four Cylinder Wings )
<<< a Wing that actually looks like a motorcycle , where you can see the engine, not all covered with plastic >>

I so agree with Ernest ... just get the tools you need 10,12,14,16 mm 6 point sockets and a ratchet wrench will do almost everything , and would be cheaper than a 122 piece set from a Walmart , and you will use them all.
Nothing wrong with a cheaper torque wrench from Princess Auto, as long as you check it against a mechanics friends $300 torque wrench
( I check mine once a year )

The back wheel is really a bear because of the up and down ballet you have to do to get the axel out , and because of the right lower shock bolt ( which is square ended, instead of tapered).

For the rear tire I use .. a small platform jack, a scissor jack on the swing arm , a long lever 2x4 and 6x6 block to move the tire up and down .... and of course moly 7 for the splines ...

Have fun ..

but ... also enjoy riding your new machine ..
