No ! Make sure both mating surfaces are cleaner than clean. clean all threads thoroughly and apply a very small amount of lube , assemble as described in your manual and make sure you torque to proper specs and in the proper order . have a good one .

Your this far might as well not a big deal for cost . Take lots of pics and take your time . Make sure when assembling that new valve cover gaskets and bolt grommets are installed!!

Just be sure not to lose the 'oil control orifice when you pull the head off and be sure to put it back upon reassembly. It's a small part ond easily dropped/lost. As far as gasket sealer, I do, and have always used Copper Coat spray and reassembly immediately. Never had a head gasket failure. Just be sure the head and case surfaces are properly cleaned.

Here's a good video to watch. He's working on an 1100 but it applies to the 1200 as well. He uses Copper Coat, which is a spray on product, but I don't feel its absolutely necessary. Just something he prefers.

if you recognize the gasket name its probably ok , if its some kinda goofy name with a incredibly low price ya might want to stay away from it , and that goes for most gaskets and parts . that said if you can suffer the extra cost for oem why not . its a lot of work to try to save 50 bucks on inferior parts IMO those gaskets should go on clean and dry , someone mentioned copper coat spray .. A light coat of something like that might be OK . but they shouldn't need a sealer the gaskets should do the sealing .

I want to thank everyone for helping me get my ole Betsy going again. She has a hundred thirty thousand miles on her. Was wondering if I should replace both head gaskets or just the one ?

The left head gasket is just as old as the right one. What do you think?

Well I'm getting ready to start on this GL 1200 1987 model , still not sure if I should do one or both heads.
Also was wondering how hard is all this is really going to be I know that exhaust is going to be tough I've tried to find one on eBay I found one but it's in pretty bad shape. Also was wondering how hard the lifters are going to be to mess with because their self adjusting and whatever. Will I have to take the cylinder head apart the cam and stuff out of it like the lifters to resurface the head ?
