Stator, Poorboy, Sight Glass, and other stuff!!!

Post by mikeanw »

Morning All

Ok so my new to me 85 Aspencade needs a bit of babying.

I do have one wire from the Stator that shows open and produces 8vac. the other 2 seem fine. I am getting a small charge (13.8V) and i am trying to ignore it for now but I will do the poorboy upgrade very soon.

I am having intermittent issues getting spark and it seems to be bad connectors. If i play with the wiring from the PG's, I can get it to start and idle nicely (relative term, because I have carb kits on the way and I have a small leak on #3 carb) but it will run and sit there happily until it gets very hot).

Brakes and new rubber are going on as well, and all have arrived.

Needs a new sight glass for the Front master cylinder. Anyone know where to get one?

So heres the plan:

Tires and brakes this weekend, and Carbs if the kit comes in time

Timing belts, PG's , Poorboy kit, after i manage to get it all ordered. Is it worth getting the full kit or the partial?

Regardless, guidance and/or feedback is always welcome, will attempt to post pics as I go along, Dremel, Torches and MIG welder all on standby for support!!!

M

Master Cylinder Sight Lens 18mm - (Pair of 2), Premium Set Replacement with O-Rings for Hydraulic Brake Lever is what I used for my 1985 Aspencade. Works far better than the plexi that I used last year for the master brake cylinder, and no sealant to dry.

Bought it from Amazon, for 9.00, a little harder to install but a far better result. I used a couple of thin pieces of wood and a very small (3" I think) c clamp to get it most of the way in, then used a hammer and another piece of wood to make sure it was in all the way.

With a new o-ring and push fit it held fluid immediately, and the sight glass has a space between the outer face and the sight metal disk so it's easier to see the level.

When replacing the leaking window be sure to remove the parts shown in the picture.

That plug with the burnt out connector looks just like mine did before I used a connector outside of the connector.... What is that connector, the rectifier / regulator?

See the pictures from mine..

It was the regulator plug. there are a couple others as bad (Stator wires)

All to be disconnected when the alternator arrives.

For now, brakes and tires.

Ok. Front Brakes and tire installed with balancing beads!

Now onto the fun stuff. Belts, PG and Alternator. Talked to Don, the package is shipped, in fact all the parts have shipped, now a waiting game while customs takes their time clearing them across the border. With any lick the carb kit is waiting for me at the post office.........

Seems one of the belt cover bolts decided to break off. I think it was already broken and the PO decided to glue it in somehow....time for a drill and extractor and a tap..not too fussed......

Also need to loosen the crank bolt....any wisdom on the best way to do that??

Thanks all for the guidance.

And my pictures are rotated 90degrees...lovely.

Since you have the belts off, I would use an impact gun on the crank bolt. To keep the engine from turning, leave the plugs in and put a socket on the engine turn bolt that is at the back of the engine. The bolt will/should come out fairly easy - no sense in turning the engine more than necessary. It torques to 60 ft-lbs if I recollect correctly.

I used blue loctite on the crank bolt when I installed my alt mod.

Well, my new belts arrived and with the guidance of the forum(s) i have them both installed. spun the engine over 6-8 tomes and all on track with the T1 mark.

Now if only Customs would release my PG, the Poorboy and my Carb Kit i would be all set...........

A place in the US Vintage Connections out of CA has a good selection of OEM style connectors that you may be interested in. Web site: http://www.vintageconnections.com/

Well.

All my parts arrived. PG's and Alternator installed.

Sorry I did not take more/better pictures. Also installed a carb kit and it went flawlessly, or so i thought.....

See the pic. Left rear carb. Cracked badly....

Could really use some thoughts on what to do here. Would like to NOT have to buy a full rack if I can help it...

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Aside from leaking like a sieve.....it runs GREAT!!!!! 13.5V at idle.

When you get the engine guard mounted and secured, you may find that the alt belt will rub against it. Mine has been doing this for the last year. I have ground a bit of the engine guard away but do not want to weaken it too much so I monitor and have made the decision to change the belt yearly - especially if I have lots of touring planned. These belts can take a lot of abuse so if you see it rubbing on the engine guard, it is not a show stopper. I also carry a spare just ion case - only spare part I carry.

Install looks great.

Your welcome, I am glad he had one. I may need to pick your brain when I finally get around to doing the poor boy on my Aspencade. I have an Interstate for daily riding so I can take my time with the Aspencade. I have already got the kit just been to busy around here..

New voltmeter installed. Connected to the fuse panel and switched.

It reads 1V lower than the battery charging voltage.
