Front fork lower allen bolt removal video

Post by Riccarr »

Hi all

I was having the age old problem of getting the lower allen bolt out when the damper rod just spins. I read here the broomstick method which I couldn't get working. I also read somewhere someone using ratcheting straps over the handlebars.

Here's a set of videos I made using a modified ratcheting strap approach. Worked well for me and saved the day.

Part 3 is where the action happens.

There is often thread locker on the bolt which requires heating. Always heat the bolt head up first before removing caps then use an air impact wrench to loosen the screw, has never failed me yet.

That is a very good solution to remove the bottom allen keys.

Well done - :)

It would have come right out if you had a "real impact driver" instead of using a drill and a bit!

I find that it always works much easier if you remove that allen head bolt before removing the top fork cap (let the spring tension work to your advantage). And yes, a good quality impact gun helps. I always spend the extra 15 minutes and remove the fork tubes from the bike. It makes the whole job easier (In my humble opinion). Besides, I hate working on my hands and knees.
