86 Goldwing Exhaust Header Repair

Post by jameselindorff »

Hello again: Has anyone repaired their exhaust header outlet (into the muffler) pipes? What size pipe did you use? I don't have a caliper but it seems like 40mm is correct. Any tips. Thanks

Yes, did the exhaust pipe nipples on my '85 LTD. The left and right side are not at the same angles so they have to be custom fit. Don't know what the pipe size is but you can have the nipple removed - it is welded in, grind off the old weld. Make sure the person doing the removal details the angle needed when putting the new nipple on. Take the nipple to a muffler shop and it should have the size you need.

Good luck.

I did mine. 1 1/4 " rigid conduit is EXACTLY the right size. The new OEM gaskets fit sung/perfict. Pull system and cut off junk. Cut new nipples and grind off galvanizing where weld will go. disconnect bike battery. Reinstall exhaust sustem with nipples and gaskets slid into mufflers. Get everything lined up. Now you can tack weld nipples to the headers at the proper angle. Pull the pipes back off and weld nipples solid to headers. Somewhat of a PITA but results are outstanding. Paint all welds with Hi Temp zink rich spray bomb. Good luck

Hello: yes and yes...I did have to pre-install to get it lined up. Smart to do in any case. I removed the shields and sand blasted the weld area prior to welding. Marked the joint with a sharpie. Thanks for your replies and maybe this will help others. Best wishes.

If you need new exhaust bands, the ones from an 1800 will fit. Ordered a pair for mine, and they are the same size - diameter and all.
