1986 1200 not sure

Post by skeeney »

My 1986 interstate was garaged for three years and not started. Carbs rebuilt but runs 6 min. stops and won't restart.

Spark.. compression.. fuel..
Which one is missing?
Unlikely the compression...
When it won't start..pull one plug wire and check for spark...
If it's there, open one carb drain plug..see if the carb has fuel...
If it's out of fuel, check the fuel filter, pump operation, and fuel shutoff.
I forgot to turn mine on once too

It starts and runs great for 6-7 min. I think it may be the coil but don't know how to check it.

Check for a plugged fuel cap vent.

When it quits..pull one spak plug wire off..attach a spare spark plug..lay it on the engine...crank the bike and look to see if it has spark.
The bike has 2 coils.2 pulse coils and one (dual) ignition module.

If it will start again after a period of time (once it cools down) it sounds like you have a faulty pulse generators. They are located inside the front timing covers. They should show approximately 320 resistance and probably do when your bike is cold. They connect to the wiring under the tank just in front on the voltage regulator 8 wire connection. Check the resistance when cold and then check when your bike stops after it's 6 minute run. If at that time they read 0 resistance you have found the problem. :D
