Re: Gl 1200 headgasket
Usually you need to strip the head. Valves/springs, cams. You dont want any shavings stuck or left behind to destroy your cams or valves and steams. If your taking to a machine shop they will insist.

Same as yours... 87I. I got my parts in the mail yesterday so I will be starting to put things back together later this week or next week. It just depends on how much time I get away from my wife's big project... renovating a bathroom.

Re: Gl 1200 headgasket
Heads shaved... no. When I got the heads off and everything cleaned up, I laid a good straight edge over the surfaces and luckily everything is straight and true.
Trouble getting the heads off... nothing that a few taps with a rubber mallet didn't take care of.
Doing both... probably isn't necessary, but a long time ago I went with the idea that if I am tearing it apart for one side, I may as well do both, so both heads are off.

Yes, replace the seals. And check the valve guides themselves. Have the valve seats/valves ground or lapped in if not bad. check the exhaust valves real good. They get the hottest. Check the seats in the head also.

Re: Gl 1200 headgasket
I am not changing the valve seals on this motor. When I rebuild my 84 motor, that is a different matter completely.
