Coolant leak on 86 Aspencade

Post by Squatchmo »

I just purchased an 86 Aspencade. It runs great, but after a short ride (10 or 15 miles), I notice there are a few drips of coolant on the right side, underneath the faux tank where there is an informational sticker. I let it run for 15 min. in the garage at 2000 rpms but no visible leak; the fan kicked in, and the LCD temp gauge never went beyond 1/2 way. I rode it again today and it did the same thing and the fluid level that is in the tank is visibly lower today. I looked at the coolant reserve tank and noticed that the rubber "grommet" where a hose with a tube comes into is wet, so that looks like the source of the leak. It's not the overflow hose that comes out by the cap, it's the other one that has an "L" shaped tube.

I know I'll have to take off the faux tank cover to find out for sure, but I was just wondering (if I confirm that this is in fact the source of the leak) are these easy to find and install? Anything I need to know first? Thanks!

This is what I did to mine. Got some clear hose, used the same elbow I think? I used my grommet kit and a 1800 watt hair drier.
Make sure the radiator cap is not building up to much pressure in the cooling system.

Thanks twocams! Have you ridden it a lot since that fix? Did yours do the same thing (weep/leak out of the grommet area)? And finally, a stupid question - how can I find out if my radiator cap is okay?

I went on a 600 mile ride after. With no problems. But have sense sold the bike. They have what is called a radiator pressure tester. Borrow one from O'Riley Auto Parts. Can test the cap/radiator also with it. But I would just buy a new cap at O'Riley/Napa, take the old one with. think they are 13 or 14 lbs. Dont get one any more than book says. Mine just looked like crap & could leak any minute.
