Radiator cap for 86 gl1220a
I want to replace the radiator cap and I was just wondering if I could pick one up at my nearest auto parts store, and if so, which part number? Also, is there a list somewhere that shows what "car" parts also fit the gl1200? I think I saw one once, but I don't remember where. Thanks!

Yes, just take the cap down to your local part guy. It may not look exact but as long as it is the same size and pressure.

Last year, I took mine down to a local rad shop, to see which of many he would recommend .
The nice man in the rad shop looked at it , said " Its pretty dirty " ,
sprayed it with something magical , wiped all the dirt and grit off the rubber seal,
slapped it onto a rad cap tester , cranked the pressure up to high pressure
and said " Its perfectly fine .... well the outside is still dirty ... You don't need a new one! "
... LOL
and then " No Charge for you as a senior Motorcycle owner "
I guess if the rubber is still whole, they still work .

I dont think just because the rubber is OK it will work fine. It has to relieve the pressure at the pressure on the cap. If it doesnt it could over pressurize the radiator and make it leak. Bust a seam, make a hole......blow the pump seal? Just get a new one & be good for another 25 yrs.
There are some things you can be cheap on, not on the cooling system, not on engine oil/filters.
Anything that could destroy the engine. WOW, so it cost ya $5. IMHO
