1200 SEI Fuel Filter

Post by thrasherg »

gentlemen and Ladies, I am repairing a 1200 SEI goldwing for a friend and we decided to change the fuel filter as we have no idea how old it is. Honda no longer make the fuel filter so we found a FRAM filter that had the same fittings and same length as the original filter, but it has a larger diameter. There does not appear to be any arrow indicating a preferred fuel flow direction on the filter, so I wanted to ask, can anyone tell me if fuel filters in fuel injection systems have a preferred flow direction? This filter is in the high pressure side of the fuel injection system. The bike has not run for 10 years and whilst it now starts up, it isn't running as smoothly as it should, I have put seafoam in the gas to try and clean the injectors (after 10 years of standing) but want to be sure I have not added to the problem by fitting the fuel filter with the flow in the wrong direction, on the box that the filter came in, it doesn't state a preferred flow direction, but there really isn't any useful info on the box so thought I would ask here. I suspect all is good and I just need to ride the bike a bit to clean out the grime in the injectors and get everything use to moving again..

Regards Gary

The short answer is yes, there is directional flow. I use a Beck Arnley 043-0897. It doesn't have any arrows, but does have it stamped by the outlet.

This Gold Fuel Filter almost fits in the standard GL1200 fuel filter bracket, and is much cheaper than Honda OEM :

The bike in question is a fuel injected model. The fuel filter recommended above is probably not a good choice for the SE-i with fuel pressure in the 36 PSI range. That is why the metal filter.

Here's a list of fuel filters that can be used. Check the local parts place.

Ok cool thanks a lot. Are all of these larger in diameter and are they in a metal or plastic casing?

Most if not all are larger and metal casings. It doesn't take much to modify the filter holder to fit these larger filters. Do a search of this site and you will find info on this.
