GL1200 stator replacement
Greetings!
I have a question about replacing the stator in my aspencade. I have the motor out and it is currently sitting on the bike jack. (Note: i have not drained the oil from the engine) The videos I have watched about changing the stator show the engine back end up.
Can I change the stator in the horizontal position or will I need to put it back end up to move the oil away?
Thanks for the help!

Re: GL1200 stator replacement
Recommend draining the oil. Once the oil is drained, be careful removing the rear case as there is still a good amount of oil in the rear engine case. Having the engine sitting as it came out of the bike is good. Be careful when you take off the rear engine case, the bolts can break - broke two on mine but was lucky and got the broken bolts out. H
When you change the stator, recommend doing the starter clutch, replacing these parts as well. About $20.00 CDN.
If you are so inclined an inspection of the clutch friction and steel plates can be done as well. Check the steel plates for any bluing from overheating and being flat all round, and the friction plates for condition. If the steel plates are good, you may want to change the friction plates as a good maintenance issue.
Since you have the engine out, you may want to rebuild the clutch slave cylinder while the engine is out, lots of room to work on it. Parts about $20.00 CDN - less south of the border.
Cheers

Question
Is there a snap ring or something around the drive spline? I cannot get the back cover off and I have not seen anyone mention such in any of the videos.

Re: GL1200 stator replacement
No snap ring around he drive spline. There are dowel pins for alignment. Give it a gentle pull and it should come off. Careful with the engine output shaft when you pull the rear casing. You have to hold it from moving or it will come out with the rear case.

Thank you sir. When I looked at the exploded view in the manual I didn't see one but the cover doesn't want to budge. I will put Wd40 on it overnight and see how it does tomorrow.

Try a rubber mallet?

A rubber mallet, a dead blow mallet, a regular hammer (with a wooden spacer). I'm at a loss here folks. The rear cover will NOT separate from the drive spline. What am I missing?

Addendum:
The cover will move away about 1/8" but then stop. The drive spline moves with it.

Push in on the drive spline, the oil seal just slides over the spline. Gently pry the cover away from the main engine case. It will come.

Well folks, it would seem that there is a lock nut behind the dust cover/ oil seal. (See the pictures)
Has no one ever had to take this apart to remove the rear cover? I cant imagine that I have the only **** engine on the planet. I'm hoping that removing it will allow me to pull the rear cover.

Re: GL1200 stator replacement
From your pictures seems there is sufficient room for the cover to be removed. That shaft is not supposed to come out with the rear cover, ergo, neither the nut. The shaft seal should stay in the case. My output shaft seal came away from the output shaft with the rear case. Put the rear case back on with the old seal in place, no leaks.
Sometimes after a lot of years the seal might adhere to the shaft it is keeping oil from leaking, but in this case the output shaft turns and the shaft seal does not, so it should have come off without removing the seal from the case.
Cheers

Re: GL1200 stator replacement
I compared the picture you posted on your first reply to my question with mine. Your drive spline does not have that retention nut. Looking at the exploded view of the cover in the manual it seems to show the final bearing coming out with the cover. Is this the case?

My engine configuration is different from yours.
looked at the parts fiche as well. Your shaft has a few more bits than mine, but the parts fiche illustrates you shaft and the one I have in the 1987 Aspy parts fiche.
Don't know why.

The locking nut was removed and the cover came off without a problem. The stator had been replaced and things are going back together again. Thank you all for your help and patience.

Any chance you took more pictures of that output shaft AFTER the rear case was off? I don't think I have ever seen one with a lock nut on it before...
