speedometer making noise . what to use for lubrication?

Petroleum jelly,or 90w gear oil will work on the cable. IF the head need lubrication, remove cluster turn it up side down oil the spindle with a gun oil, just a few drops .

If you can find some - use powdered graphite.

how long will gun oil last? I live in the desert year round. Palm desert, ca.

Is this powdered graphite the same that is sued key locks? how long will it last?

It will last a long time - it doesn't dry out..
I probably would not use oil as it can attract dust and cause further issues - whereas the graphite does not. But I would use it on the cable only.

I use a white lithium grease in a spray can for speedo cables and stuff.
