New to the Wing
I'd like to start with saying hello, as I'm new to the forum, as I've just picked up my first GW about 2 months ago.
A little bit of backstory in me, I've been riding about 40 years, mostly sport bikes, some standards, dirt bikes,etc... But never a cruiser, bagger etc.... About 2 months ago a friend of mine stopped by with his 84 Aspencade with only 32k miles, and he was thinking of selling it, I asked him how much, and I'll ask around for him. He quoted me a price but said if I wanted it he'd cut me great price in it. I said its not my style of bike, but thanks for the great price.
I thought about it that night and did my research on the bike, as I know the current owner and I also know the previous owner as well, so I know it's been a garage queen fit sure. He did the oil and filter, New tires, New battery at the start of the season, but he didn't ride it much, maybe 500 miles at best.
So I called him a few days later, and I was still on the fence about it, he said I could borrow it for the day, and take it out for a long test drive. So I did about 200 miles worth, and I fell in love with this bike, and now I've added it to my stable.
It's has a few small things wrong with it, but no major issues, as I spent the last couple of months riding it, as I needed to get comfortable with it. Glad I took the chance.

Re: New to the Wing
LoL I'm that way with all my bikes. So far I've replaced the speakers, that were not only blown but mismatched, and wired all messed up.
I replaced them with Polk Audio DB+ 4" (DB402) which I got for new crazy cheap
I've also fixed a few small things, one of which was the so-called screws in the clutch and brake covers. I replaced them with titanium ones
Installed Gammatronix 12V LED battery level/charge monitor(L) and a Ice Warning LED indicator alarm/low temperature(R) and a Kruzer Kaddy in black. Added an LED headlight bulb, along with replacing the other ones as well.
I enjoy modifying the most and adding making it my bike.
Stay tuned for more to come.

That's a beautiful old bike. I hope you have a great time and are able to put many miles on it
I've only been here a few months myself and bought my Wing this past July. I had a LOT of fun on my last bike, a Hayabusa, but sorta wished I'd gotten a Wing instead now.

Re: New to the Wing
Well well, looks like you are already addicted.....good for you. Keep playing, it will only add a goofy smile on your face, of course different than the other rides you have had. I came from Cruiser background then flipped to touring and will probably never look back (unless I can add to my stable which I already received permission from the better half).

Re: New to the Wing
I'm sure I will add more, I also added a bigger windscreen, as I'm a tall person I needed to taller windscreen.
It's a slipstreamer model I got it for $50 barely used, looked new and it definitely helps.
On the list is heated grips, as I put them on all my bikes.
I'm also looking into a MOSFET upgrade to the R/R, I've done this on my other bikes too and maybe a CoPs conversation as well.
As far as the saddle goes, what are the popular choices out there? What about adding a backrest?
Also what maintenance items should I put on the list, timing belts? Etc????
Thanks

Re: New to the Wing
The term "Cops" got me to looking for what it is:
https://honda-tech.com/forums/forced-in ... n-1344468/
That article describes using it on a bunch of stuff, and how it is standard on modern automobiles today.
He also talks about how the motorcycle industry used it long before car manufacturers did.
Parts List:
-Engine Management System (AEM, MoTec, or any other EMS with multiple coil outputs.)
-Ignition Amplifier (AEM C2Di, MSD DIS 2, MSD DIS 4, etc)
-Coils (MSD Blaster Coils, Honda Motorcycle Coils, LS1 Coils, Marine Coils, etc)

Re: New to the Wing
I've done the CoPs (Coil over Plugs) conversation on my Ninja 250 & both 500s, along with running NGK iridium plugs.
I've done a write up on the CoPs and posted to both the Ninjette.org and EX-500.com forums which I'm a senior member of both.
The CoPs offer a stronger spark, does away with the spark plug caps and HT leads, etc... This eliminates things that can go wrong, and cleans up the top of the engine in the ninjas.
With the better/stronger spark, it allows you to open the spark plug gap a bit more to take advantage of the hotter coils. I've run this set up for many seasons with no ill effects.
I will have to do some research on doing to wing.

More personal touches added.
I found a pair of front turn signals with the "vent " looks dirt cheap, but the chrome was badly worn which is perfect for my needs.
Once I got them I decided to prep them and paint them satin black to match the front vents.
I prefer the blacked out look, as it goes with the color scheme of the bike and the color which is Pearl Siren Blue paint code PB123PA.

Update:
New iridium plugs Old vs New
I've read that the stator connector is prone to issues, so I'm replacing it with a Metripack 280 Series Three Conductor Set https://m.delcity.net/store/Metri-Pack- ... pwQAvD_BwE
And changing out the dogbone main fuse with a GM Delphi Fuse Holder Kit ATC ATO With 30 Amp Fuse

Nice addition to your stable, I like what you're doing so far. I've become a fan of iridium plugs myself and when the time comes to replace the plugs in my Goldwing I'll be using them as well.
Winging it every chance I get
19,119 miles when I got it from dad Oct 15, 2017 --- 28,659 miles and counting as of Sep 11, 2020!

Re: New to the Wing
As with my other bikes that have a brake light modulator installed. I decided to go with and installed the BackOFF™ Wig-Wag™ Brake Light Module by Signal Dynamics.
http://www.signaldynamics.com/backoffwigwag
I installed it a bit differently, instead of right/left, I decided to go with upper(trunk)/lower(saddle bags) as not to confuse drivers into thinking that it was turn signals of some sort.
I had a friend follow me, and he said they worked as planned, they definitely get the attention needed.

Re: New to the Wing
On my recently acquired Goldwing from my dad, he had one installed that flashed the trunk brake lights. I removed that one and installed the United Pacific 90655 brake attention module to flash the LED brake lights in the spoiler instead. I chose the United Pacific module because you can adjust the flash rate as well as the flash duration, which are features I wanted. I have it set to flash 3 times rapidly then go steady. Definitely gets your attention.

Re: New to the Wing
So I've been logging the miles on the GW about 1k so far and all is going well. The new plugs increased MPG +2 and it's running a bit smoother, starting easier.
Next I looked at the stator connector, which has been know to cause issues, and good thing I did. It was melted, corrosion, etc... As seen in the pictures below.
I replaced it with Metripack 280 Series Three Conductor Set. A much needed repair for sure, before it got worse, and for the looks of it not a moment too soon.
After that an oil change(Mobil 1 15-50w)and filter, but I upgraded the filter with a
PC Racing FLO Drop In Stainless Steel Oil Filter. If your not familiar with them, you should check them out. I've been using one on my Ninja 250 for several years now.
http://www.pcracingusa.com/Honda-Kawasa ... _p_88.html
Next on the list is the dog bone fuse, and timing belts, as I'm sure they've never been done.
Ive looked at the video and write-up, looks straight forward enough, but anything else I should know? And other parts I should replace while I'm in the neighborhood? I have new springs and the o-ring for the water pump that I need to remove.

Re: New to the Wing
I don't know what terminal size 280 connector you got (for which gauge wire) but there is a lot of power going through that connection - upwards of 20 amps when the battery is discharged or the bike is under heavy electrical load. Any resistance will generate heat, which is why you saw the melting in your old connector. I would check on your connector after a couple of good long rides as well as some shorter stop/start/ride cycles. Make sure the connector isn't hot, and that the pins are not deforming, discoloring or the connector melting. Also, if you didn't solder the wires into the pins (instead of just crimping) that might be a good idea.

Thxs, here's the specs on the connector
Metri-Pack 280 Series. These in-line Delphi connectors feature high current and current density in a small, compact design. Because of their excellent resistance to temperature, chemicals, and abrasions, Metri-Pack 280 connectors may be used in under-hood automotive applications as well as most marine, off-road, and agricultural applications. Rated for 16 volts and 30 amps, Delphi connectors must be used in conjunction with a sealed Splice Pack system.

Re: New to the Wing
Long overdue post
I put about 5k last season, even a trip out to NC coast. I've also done some upgrades, mods, etc.. since my last post, here's a list of some of them
New timing belts Used Saddleman seat I replaced the front reflectors with hi/low LED reflectors, and installed switchback LEDs in the side headlight marker lights, and blacked out the front.
Never miss a video: Subscribe to the GoldwingDocs YouTube channel today!
New gel battery After the riding season, which I enjoyed the bike so much, I'd do further things.
Here's a few spoilers that are being done.

Update:
I've drove into the brake system, new EBC full floating rotors, EBC HH pads, Stainless Steel brake lines, flush/fill with DOT 5.1, fully serviced calipers as well. I'd also installed new sight glass in the front master.
Next was new tires Kenda K671, with Ride-On Motorcycle Tire Balancer and Sealant.
Changed the rearend, and engine oil.
Flush/fill clutch with DOT 5.1, replaced the sight glass as well.
A few more things to do, and it will ready for the season.
Side note : pics of the master cylinders look orange but to my phone's orange case. I assure you it's clean fluid

Re: New to the Wing
Update:
The bike is running great, except for the starter is going, I've checked everything, but after 35 years, it's time has come. I will be ordering one from Rick's Electric soon enough.
Other things I have done is a MOSFET R/R upgrade, I just cut the old plug off the old R/R and installed the MOSFET connectors on it. If your not familiar with MOSFET R/Rs, they work far better than the shunt style R/Rs that a lot of older bikes come with.
I've done this before on my all 3 of my Ninjas, even posted a how to on the other boards for those bikes.
Here's a few pictures to give you an idea
The MOSFET I use is a FA020AA, and the connectors are easily sourced.
The other thing I have done is added a USB port for the passenger. It's a 3.1 amp dual port, which plugs into the tender connector when needed.
Other things on the to do list is fork seals, dust seals, but I'll save that for the off season.
Other than that all is going well so far this season.

Like the work, nice job. Cheers
