Pulse Generator color code

Post by M.L. Cook »

On my 1987 1200 I removed the pulse generators. There are two of them. Which generator is on the top?
The wires are Blue and White/Blue and the other pair is White/Yellow and yellow. Which goes where? I can't find any information on any Manuals.

Blue on top. The wires to the lower, yellow pickup are just slightly longer.

It depends on whether you're talking about the non-fuel injected or fuel-injected GL1200.

The non-fuel injected 84 GL1200 has the pulse generators on the back of the engine:

GL1200 1984 Pulse Generators location

85 and later has them on the front:

GL1200 85 and Later Pulse Generators

The circuit shows the yellow and yellow/white wires are for the 1/2 cylinders and the blue and blue/white wires are for the 3/4 cylinders.

Looking at the back of the engine on the 84, you can see the blue wires are connected to the left pulse generator and the yellow wires are connected to the one on the right.

On the 85 and later, the top pulse generator has the blue wires, and the bottom one has the yellow wires.

On the GL1200 FI, the crank angle sensors (not technically pulse generators, as they are not directly triggering the coils) are on the front of the engine. Confusingly, the GL sensor (responsible for cylinders 1/3) is on the right side of the bike, and the GR sensor (responsible for cylinders 2/4) is on the left side of the bike. This is the view looking at the front of the engine:

On this bike the yellow wires are on the GR sensor, and the blue is on the GL sensor:

Only the 84 has the PGs on the back of the engine, after that they were on the front.

I really don't think it matters, but I have the covers and radiator off of my 87 right now, so I'll take a look when I get home tonight.

I am not sure but I think the firing of the coils will be out of phase. I am going to install them with the yellow and white coil on the bottom.

The engine is out of a 1997 1200I.

97 was not a 1200 and as I posted above, the yellow and white is on the bottom.

Guys, he said 1987 GL1200 in his first post, and I recognize him from previous questions about the ignition module. It's not an EFI engine. The question was correctly answered three times. Does nobody read anything but the header before diving in headfirst?

Guilty of jumping in head first. Sorry to take your glory... it is all yours to bask in.

I don't ask for credit, only cash. But the answers kept getting more and more involved, and then questioning the model...

That tends to happen when wrong information is provided either in answers or questions. Also, when a long post with pictures follows a short one line post, that one line post may also be missed, which is what happened with me. I overlooked your post.

Oh and make sure you check your mailbox every day... checks in the mail.

Yes...but when someone in the future types "GL1200 pulse generator wire colors" into Google and finds this topic, they might have a different model of GL1200. Having all the information there for the different models makes sure they aren't misled because they weren't aware that there IS a difference between the models.

The other issue is fitment. The PG sensors on the non-FI '85 to '87 1200 can only fit one way as the leads are different lengths. Know this because I fitted an NOS PG sensor harness from an '85 Aspy onto my '85 LTD FI model in place of the OEM Ns sensor. The sensor with the blue and white wires should only fit in the upper mounting location, yellow and white goes to the lower mounting location.

Only one sensor connected at this time, the other a spare in case the one fails.

Cheers
