Well I have been busy lately tearing this Classic down for a good going over. I finally hand
spun the motor after letting the MMO sit in the cylinders a few days. I slowly ratcheted the
motor in small increments each way. When I felt confident all seemed good I gave her
a couple full revolutions and she is spinning freely. So relieved motor is not seized after
many hours of teardown. Should have probably done that 1rst but my goal is to try and
get this Classic breathing again. Pulled timing belt covers and it looks like brand new inside
there. One thing I noticed inside was there is only 1 crank sensor mounted on bottom side.
of crank. I know the pulse generators are located on right side back by fuel pump.
My question here is: Is there a crank sensor missing on top side of crank because I
do see where there is a mounting (2 bolt holes about an inch or better apart just like the bottom side sensor) spot that looks identical to the lower side sensor? Any help is Greatly appreciated.
Have her almost pretty much stripped down now and my next move is pulling rear wheel
and gas tank. Gas tank had gas for 8 years in her just sitting. Drained tank as she was slow
running at 1rst but gradually streamed alot faster. Tank looks brand new inside except for
the top 1/4 where gas wasn't full , just minor flaking. (This is great) One issue I see is a heavy
grease caking right below right rear shock where bolted connection (4 nuts at connection) is for the rear drive I guess. Won't be long and I can start the cleaning detail and then the BUILD back up
Lots of hours to this project I see but being retired what else do I have to do. I'm having fun
and have done plenty of research on this machine and learned plenty on Goldwingdocs here.
I can tell there are some Great people here and very knowledgeable. Have the Honda shop manual and the Honda SE-I manual. Pretty informative. Well anyway, sorry for the long winded post and
hope someone can answer the Crank sensor question. Is there 1 or 2 mounted in the timing belt
area for the 1986 Se-I Aspencade? Thanks to all that respond. Will eventually show pictures once
I have her to the point of starting to put her all back together again..So much to do let alone the $$.
Take care all...

Re: Question on 1986 Se-i (Long Post)
There should be 2 pulse generators attached top and bottom of the crank (center) sprocket. I tried to attach a picture from the Haynes manual, no joy, but its on the bottom of page 5-3, figure 4.8. If you don't have the Haynes manual, you can find it in this site. Hope this helps!jimmy's winging now wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 11:47 am Is there 1 or 2 mounted in the timing belt area for the 1986 Se-I Aspencade?

Re: Question on 1986 Se-i (Long Post)
The FI bikes don't use the units the Aspy do. The FI bikes use one, from the pictures I've seen. Should be able to search the forum and find the info. Search Se-i and LTD, that's the FI bikes. Maybe someone has the info tagged?

Riding anything is a good day!

Re: Question on 1986 Se-i (Long Post)
The sensor you are mentioning in the timing belt area is the Ns sensor and are primarily for engine timing. There is only one senor fitted in the lower position. The SE-i equivalent to the PG sensors are the Gr/Gl sensors fitted to the end of the camshaft on the right cylinder. These are primarily for injector timing.
The carb models '85 to '87 have 2 PG sensors fitted here and there is a different trigger wheel for these model. The '85 LTD and '86 SE-i fuel injected models have a multi=tooth trigger wheel, while the carb models have a large lobed trigger wheel.
Here is the parts fiche showing the multi-tooth and lobed trigger wheels. P/N 3 is for the fuel injected models, P/N 14 is for the carb models and the two PG sensors. This picture shows the single lobed trigger wheel for the carb models. This picture shows the multi-tooth trigger wheel for the fuel injected models with the single Ns sensor.
The Ns sensor can be in the lower or upper position, no difference to operation. My '85 LTD had the 1500 sensor mod and it was installed in the upper mounting position.
Should the Ns sensor go out of spec and you have to replace it, some have used a single 1500 sensor in place of the one installed on your bike and install this sensor in the upper position as shown below. My Ns sensor failed and I replaced it with a PG sensor set from an '85 Aspy. I fitted this sensor set as if it was a carb model but only hooked up one of the sensors to the system (can't hook up two). The second sensor is in place should the one being used fail so I don't have to take the front of the bike apart to install a new sensor.
My second '85 LTD has the same corrosion in the fuel tank as yours, where there was no gas it has developed some rust. This bike had not been operated for 3 1/2 years so there is some crud in the fuel lines, would recommend replacing these as well as the fuel filter. If you have trouble with the fuel shut off valve, leaking or such, it can be rebuilt.
Regarding the Gr/Gl sensors, there are no new OEM sensors available. Might get lucky looking on eBay. I watch for these items all the time.
These fuel injected bikes are fairly bulletproof. The fuel injection system is more forgiving than the carb models. I have found an auto wrecker to be your best friend for some components. Honda did not reinvent this FI system, but used existing parts from the auto lineup.
Hope this helps.
cheers

Re: Question on 1986 Se-i (Long Post)
Lots of similarities between the carb and fuel injected models, but this isn't one of them. I made a similar post regarding the trigger wheel a couple of weeks ago. That's when I learned the difference between the carb and FI models regarding the trigger wheel. Learn something new all the time. -that's what makes these forums so good.

Re: Question on 1986 Se-i (Long Post)
Thanks a million for all this information you guys. I appreciate it all. Rednaxx,
I remember your post on the trigger wheel and that kind of motivated me to
check this out more. Your pictures today were very helpful. My bike matches
to your pictures for the Se-I exactly. It also has the multi-tooth trigger wheel.
The knowledge of you guys along with all the information on Goldwingdocs
is just Awesome and just in a few weeks time I have studied and learned so
much along with re-reading my Honda manuals on this great Classic, ( along
learning about the gl 1200's) Once I get a few more things apart I'll post pics of this restoration. She's almost stripped down and am anxiously waiting to start detailing and getting her
cleaned up and polished. Again, I Thank all who responded.
