How is attached the driver backrest on a GL1200,1984?

hi all ,
well i am now in my work schedule on my 1984 too the Driver backrest and i need to know how it is attached at the motorcycle?

anyone have one of 2 photos of the fixation,i never seen one here so i am searching how they attached it !

i will built my own here ,

You don't say what brand Backrest you have.

there are several different methods of installs depending on the brand.

Utopia uses a single brace that goes down thru the seat. That brace is "L" shaped and bolts to the bottom of the seat pan.

Older brands used a yoke type affair that swivels from the sides of the seat pan, and are actually bolted to the frame.

thats the one i will built myself,i dont like the other that make an hole on the seat.

so you are saying they are fixed on the bike? and you have to slide the seat between the backrest support when you have to dismantle the seat???

my seat is a travelcade,,at least i have a stiker on it that is writen that,it is in material and i dont like it at all!!!!!!!!

the one that was on my old gl1200 was a yoke affair, it had two swivelling mounts that attached to the frame of the bike on each side.

When a passenger needs to get on, the backrest tilted forwards against the gas tank.

after she got all settled in, I folded the backrest up and then slid my leg over the gas tank, and away we go.

never took any pictures of it,

this one doesn't swivel, it has slide in tubes on it.

it is fixed on the upper bolt of the rear chock?

those arm rest i will never install for my xyl,
an accident happened years ago here,the driver did not his life he was ejected but his passenger,,,his wife lost her life because she was not ejected because of these arm rest,,,that the conclusion of the coroner .

Mine was a Markland design, I think from mid-80's .. a single 1/8" bar goes thru the seat into a channel bolted or welded to seat pan .

The minus is for adding a sheepskin, one has to cut and re-inforce a 1" by 1/4' slot in any sheepskin cover .

The plus is its easily removable( If your passenger is oversize, or if you are carrying luggage on the seat) ,
it tilts forward a bit so a passenger can get on , it can be micro adjusted back and forth with the adjustment screw, for absolute lower back comfort ... and when its attached, thru the sheepskin , the sheepskin cannot blow away, and stays put when driving .

You would need to fabricate a channel piece, an adjustable 1/8 metal tongue to fit in the channel , and a swivel
/lock if making your own . But I bet some Bent Bike shops have one in their boneyard that could be recovered with matching leatherette .

i will try to find picture off the other one i saw,some kind of round form like a horse shoe around the seat!!!

Well, the "hole" in my seat was cut by a pro seat upholstery person , and taped , sewn and covered with a secure sewn covered flap.. Short of driving your Wing thru a flood, not much water gets in there .. and the secure sewn edge prevents " chafing " and wear from the centre bar, sliding in and out .

But before you decide ... is the backrest only for you ?
About 4 years ago, I was talking to a Wing passenger at a Wing weekend ...
Those horse-shoe shaped seat mechanisms are fine for a driver , but very difficult for a ( smaller ) passenger to mount up.

A removable center peg makes passenger mountup very easy .

Secondly , mine at least , is very very easy to adjust for my lower back , on a trip , with just a single bolt to change the backrest angle.
I am not sure about the horse-shoe models adjustment , but it looks as if it it would take longer than a minute.

Finally , if I am carrying a duffle bag or perhaps groceries , my backrest easily totally removes and stores in the top box or a saddlebag . Do the other type remove at all, in a few seconds ?

I think a lot of Harleys also use the single peg style .... When I bought the blue sheepskin from a sheepskin dealer in the central mountains, the shop owner walked out to my bike, took a quick measure ,
said " Oh , Like the Harleys " and proceeded to cut and totally reinforce ( with leather) a slot in the new sheepskin seat cover... She had obviously done this cut and re-inforcement job many times before.

Before making any decision, If I were you, I would go and sit in both the front and back seat of bikes equipped with both types : Central peg , and side mounted.

well,you may well changed my mind,,,you are good argument for the horse shoe shape and i am not sure my xyl will love that position when she sit behind me.

would have 1 -2 pictures of how it is fixed at the seat ,,

the bolts that keep it in place should have a nut too jam it in place??? i never seens one close Silver thats why i am asking a lot of questions!

i will check ,maybe Markland is still sales them.

my seat is not in leasteher but in material,,TravelCade i think his sticker said,

This would give you some idea of what you need to look for , in extra parts when at a used bike graveyard .
You might even find a seat and backrest , with the inside mount bracket allready welded on.
Someone has probably wrecked a '85 Wing somewhere .

You would want a used one which you could recover with matching fabric .

My seat is also fabric. It gets a good soaking every spring with spray waterproofing.
Sometimes I ride directly on the seat, but for anything longer than 25 miles ,
..... I MUCH prefer sheepskin ... Warm in winter, cool in summer

yes Kuryakyn are way too pricey for my budget abd i have no scrap yard of motorcycle around here,,i think there is one in Quebec and i am not sure if they keep GoldWing's parts these days,,,much more sport bikes.
