GL1200AH electrical fault, Help please.

Post by hawkeye3guns »

Hi all
Spent the winter restoring / rebuilding a 1987 GL1200AH Aspencade. She has got 101,296 miles on her but runs as quiet as a mouse and is very smooth to ride.
Last week she suddenly developed this electrical problem, going along the road and suddenly no headlight, no indicators, Horn or Brakelight.
Got her home and starting checking fuses, relay's with nothing found amiss.
By accident whilst checking fuse box I shorted across Fuse 1 (15amp Turn indicators) and fuse 3 (15amp position indicator) with a test lead. Whilst the short was in place everything came back to live and works, removing the short and the problem is back.
Somewhere I must have lost either an earth or a live feed to fuse 1.
Has anyone got any idea's where to start or heard of this fault before ? before I start tearing the bike apart again.
This is my first Goldwing and until now have enjoyed riding her but I admit its a long learning curve to work on her The Haynes manual electrical diagrams are next to useless.
Can anyone help.
Denzil

Are you sure about those fuse #s ? Fuse 1 is brake light relay #3 is fan motor. Fuse 9 is the tail/position fuse , fuse 11 is the brake horn turn fuse. You problem may be main relay 4.

Hi
Someone has labelled the fuses 1 - 11.
Fuse 1 = 15Amp Stop, Horn, Turn.
Fuse 2 = 10amp Head
Fuse 3 = 15amp Tail position
Fuse 4 = 10amp Meter
Fuse 5 = 10 amp Ign
Fuse 6 = 10amp Radio , Flasher.
Fuse 7 = 10amp Parking
Fuse 8 = 10amp Fan
Fuse 9 = 5amp ACC
Fuse 10 = 10amp Air pump
Fuse 11 = 10amp Stop

And the Relays in the same box are
Relay 1 = Stop Lamp
Relay 2 = Air Pump
Relay 3 = Cruise Valve
Relay 4 = Ign , Cruise
Relay 5 = Main

The Relay 5 is the main relay and has a black wire from the contact side running to Fuse 3 and a white wire from ?
The same relay 5 has also a black wire running from the coil side of the relay to Fuse 1 and 2 linked together and from the other side of the relay coil is a green wire.
This is all hard wired into the fuse / relay box as supplied from Honda.
Fuse 1 and 2 do not seem to be getting a supply therefore I have lost Headlight, Indicators, Horn and Stop light.
By accident whilst chasing fault I shorted across the black wire from fuse 3 to fuse 1 and everything then worked.
But obviously this is not a proper fix so need to trace fault but where?
I have a spare set of new relays and a fuse / relay box so tried replacing the lot with the same symptoms.
Thanks for any help.
