1986 GL1200A heel toe shifter bolt

Post by dhenson45 » Tue May 08, 2018 7:15 pm

Hi ,
New here so thank you in advance

New to me 86 GL1200 , Heel toe shifter bolt broke. found a new shoulder bolt identical to the old one . When I installed I realized there must have been a spacer? Or ? That was lost . I added washers to fill the 1/4 inch gap and now will not shift correct. Loosened bolt just a little so washers are not interfering / pinching against the housing bolt threads into . Taken apart and put back together many times and not sure what/ why it is not shifting. Removed heel toe and floorboard and it shifts great with toe shifter alone.

Any suggestions please

It depends on who the heel/toe shifter manufacturer is (they are not factory/OEM). Could you perhaps post a picture?

little more research. I believe the boards and shifter were made by Markland .Haven't had a bike in 10 plus years, and never used a heel to shifter before but I like the floorboards. Heel toe shifter seems unnatural, but I guess I will get used to it. I am trying to add photos but keep getting an error message when I attach

I had similar issue with my heel toe set up,
found the washers were too thick and had
to file or sand one washer to make it thinner and
then it began shifting without binding. hope this helps.

I just purchased a set of these and the bolt is striped that you broke ,where did you get your replacement bolt? also how are your floor board's attached? I have been trying to attach them but they don't seem to fit as easy as I thought they would.

Funny that's the 1st thing I took of my 1200. It was all wabbly and loose, no where close to be centered on the shifter lever.
The bike also came with a oil leak at the shifter shaft seal, thankfully there is not much play on the shifter shaft.
I was able to pry out the old seal with a small screw driver, even the new supposedly honda seal when in by hand O.O.
Luckily I always put a dab of sealer on the housing and the seal just in case.

I found the shoulder bolt at Tacoma Screw Products. I think any specialty hardware company will have them available. Standard off the shelf type bolt, but wasn’t available at my local big box stores
