Leaks after winter storage

Post by dlhurd »

Noticed antifreeze low last fall.
Added very little. Good to -25
Put away for winter.
Noticed mid winter antifreeze on floor.
Figured I spilled some.
Then noticed lots on the floor along with oil leaking also.
Just pulled it out for inspection.
Here is what I see.
Dripping from small hole behind the water pump.
Oil dripping from back part of motor.
WTH?
Thanks
Got very cold here last winter. -30 +
Stored unheated garage.

Your water pump seal has failed. That little hole is called the "telltale hole" or "weep hole" and is designed to allow the coolant to leak out instead of contaminating your crankcase oil.

You should have a look through this: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=275

From what I’m reading this would also account for the oil leaking out as well.
Correct?

Should I also replace the water pump when I do the seals and gaskets?

I replaced the water pump when I did mine, didn't want to be going back in again anytime soon. Plus I've read you can rebuild the pumps, so if I need it, I have it.

So far so good.
I’m following your link and it’s helping emensely.
Thought I would ask your opinion on what I found in one of the coolant holes. Not sure if it’s build up or sealant.

Haven't seen that kind of stuff before. Maybe a leak stop type of material, just a guess ;)

Sealant is what I thought. It’s kind of rubbery like silicone. Does not scrap off. Figure it’s better to leave it alone.
