New bike

Post by ajratt01 »

Hi everyone it's been awhile. So here's the deal, I sold my 76 wing(total regret)! Nut am looking at a 84 aspencade. It has been very well taken care of but I have two concerns I'd like your input on. It has the air ride system and digital dash. I have heard of problems with these before and wanted to get your take on it. With the age also how are partsto get and or any other issues should I look for? Thanks in advance.

well never say never I guess, anything can pack up, but Ive had my 86 aspy for 12 years and never had an issue with air suspension or the digital dash (touch wood) have heard of the odd issue with the air compressor, but for me I changed the desiccant and there have been no issues. I do long distance, and the only that has popped over 12 years, was the speedo gearbox and the stator, in both cases, parts where not an issue, although I believe (only from what Ive read) some stuff is getting a bit harder to find these days. apart from that she is has been pretty bullet proof. In my humble opinion, maintenance is the secret with these old girls, looked after, they just go and go.

good luck

I also have an '84 Aspencade. It sat for several years as the prior owner had health issues that stopped him from riding. The parts I needed to make the King of Tourings bikes (in 1984) came mostly from eBay. The digital dash hasn't had any problems. The only issue was the gear indicator didn't start working right away, not until I had ridden several hundred miles.

Had my 86 Aspy for about 10 years, no issues with dash at all, even had it out a the time when I repaired broken wires to the non working clock. Also dried out the dessicant in the air compressor about 4 years ago and air in shocks front and back work perfectly.
Don' t be afraid of it.

I've had my '85 Aspencade since 1995, never a problem finding what I needed.

I did buy a digital dash off a wreck off Ebay once to get a good odometer motor .... mine quit. Never had issue with electronic digital or air system.

Speaking of air, before Progressive suspension, I found it best to check fork air first, then check rear shocks.
With progressive suspension, no air at all on front, so blocked that off. Used adapter to adapt progressive 416 rear shocks to Honda lines.

I did install a new Honda lifetime warrantied stator in about 1998.

Thanks everybody. I've had it home a week and so far I love it. I've got a few changes to make and some small repairs but overall very happy. Just really glad to be back in the wind on a wing again!!
