1985 Fuel Injected Bike Wont Start

Post by wefindmotorcycles »

Hi guys don't laugh but just figured out that my 1985 fuel injected bike doesn't have carbs after I set out this morning all ready to take them off and clean them, so im seeking help in figuring out what I can do in order to get this bike running. First all the fairings , radio etc are off the bike and yesterday i took off the rat infested air breather and sprayed starting fluid where the breather was and the bike started right up.

My problem is when it doesnt have starter fluid the bike wont run, I checked the fuel pump and it is working and yes checked all fuses and yes my on off switch is set to on. Any ideas on why it wont run? ........thanks Todd

if your bike will run with added fuel but dies when that fuel runs out
is a sign that your fuel delivery sys has an issue, either fuel pump inop
fuel filter plugged or for some reason the ecm is not firing your injectors.
fuel pump only runs for a couple of seconds when the key is turned on
and should run when the engine is cranking and continue running after it
starts. fuel pump is under a chrome cover on the right side of the engine
just above the foot peg or running board hope this helps

Look at the computer for led light code faults.

How do I go about doing that, the computer box in the back? it doesn't have any lights...is there a testing tool for this?

It does have lights on the side of the CFI computer box. and they are used to diagnose the system:

GL1200 CFI Lights
GL1200 CFI Lights

Notes:
1. LED indicators for faulty injectors, open circuit and Ne, NR/NL sensors will turn off when the ignition turned OFF, and not relight until the engine is restarted.
2. Indicators for injectors faulty by open circuit will light only when both injectors in either bank fail simultaneously. Indicators will light however for a single injector faulty by a short circuit.
3. LEDs will blink alternately when indicating more than one problem.

That's a good indication..The computer didn't see any faults in the electrics. That leaves fuel.
There is a test port for fuel pressure.

Is this the first time you've tried to start it and it's been not run for a loooooong time?
Old fuel can plug up the system.
I'd be tempted to flush out old gas and (by applying power to the pump unhooked from the harness) circulate new fuel when testing the fuel pressure. Both static and full pump pressure.

the bike sat for six weeks before i got it, im going to check the whole fuel system to see if any clogs and figure out how to do the fuel pressure test....thanks

Interesting problem. You have a 1985 Limtied Edition bike, fuel injected and is totally different than the Aspencade that has carbs. The 1986 Special Edition injected - fuel injected bike - is known as an Aspencade as well, but not the 1985 model.

When you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump come on for 2-3 seconds then shut off. When you start the engine the fuel pump will automatically come on and provide the system with fuel. The fuel pump is on the right side of the engine down by your right foot behind the chrome cover. The power connection for the fuel pump is under the seat. When you take the seat off, locate the fuel sending unit. Look just aft of the fuel sending unit and you will see a bracket that has two relays on it, a left and right. The left relay is the 4 way flasher and the right relay is for your signal lights. Just aft of these relays is a frame cross member. Look on the right side of the bike just behind this cross member and you will see two connectors. The inner connector, 2 wire, is the power supply to the fuel pump. You can use a multimeter to prove that when you turn the key on, power is supplied to this connector. If power is at his connector, the fuel pump should come on, otherwise the fuel pump is U/S.

Suitable alternatives for the fuel pump that I have found mentioned on the forums are:

Prelude OEM – 06167-PE7-751
Walbro GSL414
Walbro GCL616
Walbro 5CA201
1986 Honda Prelude 2.0 Fuel Pump
Airtex E8312
Spectra SP1186
Delphi P/N FD0030
Denso 951-3003
Carter #P70199.

I prefer the Spectra SP1186 - have used the Airtex E8312 as well - because the pump outlet is identical to the OEM pump outlet. It is a bit longer and smaller in diameter, but you can use 1/8 inch rubber to compensate for the pump diameter.

Good luck. Cheers
