oil dipstick
Hello everyone I am new to this forum and have a couple of dumb questions that maybe someone could help with. I just purchased a 1986 gl1200 aspencade and I went to check the oil and found there was no dipstick. Where can I find one I have searched the web and the part is discontinued. I hope it didn't fall in the pan! when I change the oil I will try putting a magnet in and see if it's in there.

Good day...from Lincoln CA
Would you post a pic of the remains of the dip stick....cap..or?
The indicator portion is steel...so your thought re a magnet is a good one.....

Re: oil dipstick
I used a OEM dip stick borrowed from a buddy, got a metric bolt and 16D nail, ground bolt end to match taper, drilled hole for nail, welded nail in place, marked nail, then I made on for buddy. He sold his 1200, I kept OEM ds as a spare.

Re: oil dipstick
Thanks for the input guy's . I must have had a brain fart as I checked it today their was a dipstick duh. I feel like an idiot . I think it was because the oil looked like it was going to start leaking out. I am going thru this bike I just bled the whole brake system and put new fluid in and new pad's on.Next will be oil and filter. HOW MUCH oil does this hold with new filter?? then new rubber . Is it hard to flush the clutch master? Where do you bleed it from ?

Re: oil dipstick
Couple of e bay vendors got em. If I were looking for one,, I would send a note with a "would you accept $xx.xx delivered...or some such thing.
I had a friend come by for a ride a half hour ago....and show me his brand new to him 85 GL 1200 Interstate. I asked him if he had checked the oil........no...just got it..... He then promptly attempted to unscrew the oil filler.....cap. Go a little lower, I said.

I posted my reply re the dip stick before I saw your discovery. LoL
Oil and Filter..... About 3.4 quarts.
Clutch..... Bleeder screw is on slave cylinder....rear of engine.....bit of a squeeze in there...but you will have no trouble finding it. I replaced the oem bleeder with a 'speed bleeder'.......has a one way check ball in it.

Actual lengh of OEM dipstick
I would like to know the actual length (threads to tip) of an OEM dipstick for an 86 GL1200i . My bike came with a chrome aftermarket dipstick, similar to the one posted above. but it always reads below minimum after every oil change.
Would someone with an OEM dipstick mind removing it and measuring it?
I'm sure I'm using the correct amt of oil, so I'm not worried engine damage (its been over 10K miles now)
but I can't believe someone would make and sell a dipstick that is essentially useless??!!
Thanks in advance..
