Lifting these beasts.

I so far been able to do my own maintaince on my 1200. I found lying on the driveway was a royal pain in the butt, so I bought a motorcycle jack. A simple Craftsman. Before I use it, what's the best way to lift it without putting all the weight on the muffler pipes? I thought a couple 2 x4's but will defer to the experts. Any suggestions?

For my GL1100 I took a couple pieces of wood (could have been 2x4s originally, I don't recall) and cut them so that they contacted the frame directly, and projected down below the exhaust. The jack then lifted the bike using the wood, which transferred weight to the frame.

I have a similar but home built one . I replaced those thin runner pads with two 1/2 inch chunks off hard oak strips, inset bolted to the metal lifting flats .
Lots and lots of people carefully lift their Wing with the front pad engine (there is a nearing flat there), and the rear jack plate flat on the mufflers .. I have done that at least 25 times ... mufflers still seems ok.


But safety is a much bigger concern if a 800 lb machine fall on you ....
