Alternator conversion

Hi all, new to the forum. Using it alot to find needed info. However I can't seem to find an answer for my question, which I'm sure it's an eady one. Firstly I have an 84 1200 Aspencade. I've done the alternator conversion. Everything is wired etc. I see that most people are cutting the stator wires and capping off separately. Atm my stator wires are still plugged in because when I unplug it the bike dies. Just curious as to why? When other people are cutting them with no issues.
Also it's not charging as much as I would like. Barely 12v on idle and 13.8 at 3000rmp. I'm using a 3.5 pulley on the crank and a 2.5 on the alternator. Its a V belt. Any help would be great. Thanks

Did you hook up the wires from the Alternator output to the battery?
Is the alternator grounded ?

Yes, I have #4 wire from the alternator output post the the battery terminal and yes the alternator is grounded.

Have you measured the alternator output with a meter?

Which alternator did you use (wanting to know what wires are supposed to normally hooked up). as 3 wire alternators need at least two wires hooked up to make them start to produce electricity.

Alternator from a 93 geo metro.
Keyed 12V power exciter to alternator. There was a plug that came with it. 2 were used one was a dummy. Tried the first tab, nothing tried the second started charging as in my first post.
Thinking I need a different size pully to get it to charge atleast in the 13's while at idle.

If that is true, then you aren't making power at your alternator or if you are making it then it doesn't get to the battery

Alternator is producing power according to my meter. I will check it again tomorrow with a different meter or replace battery in meter. Should the output wire be directly to the positive terminal or is there a better location?
