Computer Fuel Injection 1986 GL1200 SEI

Can you guide me what can I check or how ro alleviate an intermittant engine stop due to fuel. My brothers boss gave me a 53,000 original miles 1986 GL1200 SEI Aspencade that would not start but crank over. I checked spark at all four spark plug cables- good. So obviously it came to a fuel related issue. Bike stop running and sat for a long time (approximately 9 months). Checked voltage at fuel pump and was good so I then removed two bolts to check pressure at fuel rail- nothing. I changed the fuel pump out because it was burnt open (no resistance between winding). The fuel definitely was bad. Had a turpentine like smell. The other thing I noticed is the fuel didn't drain out easily with the filler cap removed. I did have the fuel shut off valve completely open. Changed the pump and engine started immediately- but shuts off intermittantly. It appears as if the engine is starving due to fuel delivery at the combustion chamber. The fuel pump is from Auto Zone for a 1986 Honda Prelude since this website had a few threads that stated it would work fine. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge assembly to check my fuel pressure. I'm getting continuos voltage at pump, so I am thinking the fuel strainer at the tank is clogged or my fuel filter or even injectors. I did drain the fuel tank- had to pressurize the tank with 115 p.s.i. (shop air) to get the fuel out so I can also blow out whatever debri was in there. Would I run a risk of fouling the evaporative emission components causing this engine to starve the way it's doing? PLEASE HELP? My first motorcycle ever. 1986 Goldwing 1200SEI Aspencade

You might want to try some sea foam to help clean the injectors and the rest of the system. If the gas was that bad the whole system may be plugged up. just keep starting it and let it run as long as it will to get the sea foam threw out the system. I am sure some one else may have a idea or too also.

Thank you Kurt. One other thing I'm going to try since it was suspicious from the get go is.... I'm going to by pass my fuel tank since I believe the strainer may be an issue, by feeding the fuel pump with a glaas bottle filled with 91 octane gas and directly feeding ithe 3/8' fuel inlet hose at the pump. I like to get to the root cause of any problem so I can figure out how to come up with the best practical solution. I'll keep everyone interested posted thank you. Also, you are 100% right Sea Foam can only help at this point. Once it's running fine, I'll add some Marvel Oil to keep from rusting the tank out since it is a prone situation that takes place on our Wings.

Just put an '85 LTD FI bike back on the road this past May and drove it across Canada from northern Ontario to Victoria BC. Fuel system was an issue at the start, fuel did not flow freely from the tank to the pump. Recommend flushing the lines and shut off valve from the tank to the fuel pump inlet, could be a lot of crud in there and can get lodged in the shut off valve. Once you get fuel to free flow out of the fuel hoses, the fuel pump should not be an issue after this.

Recommend changing the fuel filter as well. Run some sea foam as others have suggested, or another good product is Yamalube Ring Free. The injectors on these FI bikes are quite robust.

Recommend getting the OEM service manual, electrical troubleshooting manual and the supplement for the SE-i, or the limited edition, both bikes are the same regarding troubleshooting and maintenance. If you don't have these, you can/could spend a lot of time searching and possibly going down the proverbial "rabbit" hole so to speak.

When you turn the key on, the fuel pump should run for 2 to 4 seconds then shut off due to pressurizing the system, and will automatically start again once the engine is started.

In 2000, a friend bought a mint 85 Ltd that had been sitting for a year and even though it ran perfect, he decided to add some redline injector cleaner as I did to my 1500. My bike made it 8 miles then sputtered to a stop after our dinner run, so I hopped on the ltd to get 3 gals of gas and never had a problem again though it wasn't on empty. The next evening his breaks down with same symptoms mine had though his tank was 2/3rds full so after hauling it home, we did the rail pump test showing zero pressure so he orders a new oem pump for $400..same problem. I removed the rear pump hose to tank and blasted it with air and hear this loud POP and looking through the sending unit, all this strange small white matter is floating around..the intake screens were plugged.

Thank you guys for the feedback. I will be committing myself to the Wing next weekend. I have flushed the tank twice, back pressurized the fuel delivery hose to the pump and installed two diffewrent pumps. API on the net has one for $40 and Auto Zone sells one from an 86 Honda Prelude for $100 dollars that both are supposed to be replacement to the original $300-$400 OEM. I will keep everyone posted and thanks for all the feedback. I do have a service manual if all else fails,.
