Greetings,
I just picked up a 1985 Interstate. I just noticed the top of the oil dipstick is sheared off. I have no idea how that happen. Does anyone know how to take it off and if possible salvage the part?
Lastly, do I need to drop the left side exhaust header to get that engine guard off?
Great project I have on my hand, thanks for your patience.

Re: oil dipstick top sheared off
I forget the metric thread, but years ago my 1200's dip stick cracked somehow, but I had a new aftermarket spare, but it seemed "chinzy" or fragile like.
I used a metric bolt of correct thread, ground thread end to same cone shape as OEM on was, drilled hole in end to hold a 16D nail, added a spot of weld and then marked it to match OEM using a file to put two notches in place. I also cut across top and welded a "tab" in place. Forget what OEM even looked like.
Works well … but first you got to get old one out.
If just want OEM, check Ebay. Any GL1200 should do.
On the guard question …. Not sure, been a long long time since I had guards off.

sorry cant really help with the dipstick, but depending on what you intend to do, ( removing valve covers) the engine guard, can moved out of the way, without dropping the headers. its fiddly but doable. if you intend to replace the guard, then yes you will probably have to undo the header.

Of course, don't expect it to last more than a few months or so before it too shears/breaksSilverDave wrote: ↑Sun Jul 15, 2018 10:31 pm If you are really stuck :

I also thought that my dipstick was sheared off when I first bought my 86 until I found out that the oil fill hole and the dipstick are in two different locations. Look to the right and down of the oil fill hole, that's where the dipstick is. Heres a pic.
