Mt. Vesuvius under the seat!

Post by jrw59ridescycles »

Hey folks!......I have a ‘86 1200A, purchased late last year. Due to some health issues, have not been able to ride until now. I had winterized the bike, and removed the battery to keep on a maintainer. Installed battery today, and cranked it over. It started right up and was idling, when all of a sudden a burning smell, and then clouds of smoke billowed out. I shut it down, and removed the battery as it continued to smoke...removed the seat, and started inspecting toasted wires and such...some wires at the starter relay were toasted down to bare wire, and u dear the seat, found 2 totally melted wires that appeared to go to a diode( what was left of it, it said “Stanley” on it, with a rectifier symbol...I cut loose the melted stuff, and started a retiring project. Other than the toasted diode, and the 2 wires that went to it ( appeared to be a green w/red, and a lighter green w/red). Reinstalled battery and relay....turn key on...no display, however, when I depress the starter button, the display lights up...but still no crank.I can bypass the relay....and motor cranks, but no start with key on....my question is: what is the rectifier for or what does it control...I will try to attach pics I took.....thanks in advance....

The wires - probably the clutch safety circuit... and the solenoid wiring is toast. That's where your problem lies - you let the magic smoke out...

What does the clutch safety circuit do?.... noticed when I tried to start it after, with no display, but when I pushed the starter button...display came on...with neutral light. I pulled the clutch and shifted, and the light went out....so...I still not sure what it does or prevents, but definitely have to get a new diode...and replace a lot of wires...😕

If the diode is no good - then you will not be able to start the bike - unless you bypass this circuit.

The purpose of this circuit is to disable the start procedure if you try to start the bike whilst "in gear".

The associated wiring from the solenoid connection is also an issue - but I'm no electrical expert so wait for someone else to chime in with a possible solution for you.

Problems usually can start from a lot of corrosion where the electrical items join as they are subject to atmosphere and humidity, any corrosion build up requires more energy to push through the corrosion. making your electrical system work harder. Clean up all our connections as you go, particularly the "earth" points.

Thanks Aussie for the info !
Yes, the diode is toast....literally...fell apart in my hand, once it cooled down...and, yes....I will be ordering a new starter relay and it’s associated wiring harness, plus repairing/replacing various other wires that melted due to the heat.
I will, indeed, check, clean and seal any connection can find, as I go.
Does anyone have a part number, or a place to purchase the replacement diode?
