safety shut off?

Post by westy57 »

Is there any shut offs for overheating on a 86 SEI Gl1200? I shut off during ride in hot weather & pump did not come on til it cooled off.Happen a few time when stop & go in hot weather & jerked & bogged like it was starving for fuel.Once it cooled down ran fine.Is my fuel pump on it;s way out?

Having a fuel problem in hot weather and the engine seems to be starved for fuel is a known problem that can happen to the '85 LTD and '86 SE-i. Honda came up with a mod to fix/minimize this issue, but I have yet to find the specifics of how Honda installed the modification. The fuel pump is not on the way out. The fuel being returned to the fuel tank is hotter than usual and when this happens, you smell more fuel vapour when riding the bike.

I think what happens is the hotter fuel causes the fuel pump to cavitate; ergo, the need for Honda to put out a service bulletin to fix/minimize this issue. I only had this problem once in the three years I've been riding my '85 LTD. This happens until you cool down the fuel as you have mentioned.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

TY sooo much! It's never been turned off & then not restart immediately. But the bogging & starving has happen twice in extreme riding temperatures. That would explain why when I thought it was bad gas or water in tank stopping & putting fuel in resolved the bogging.I thought maybe vapor lock? I'd hear the '"swish" pressure release when opening gas cap & thought maybe dirt dobber in vent hose.I notice right away the pump didn't have that start up squeal turning on the ignition all else was normal.Sure was glad to hear the squeal 15 min later! 1 hour from home off the deserted Natchez Trace in Mississippi!!!!
