I am replacing my speedometer cable today and am wondering if anyone lubricates inside the sending unit before attaching the cable.

This is a pic from the unit of an 81 400 just so you can see the unit better.

When I remove my front wheel for tire replacement, the gear assembly comes off the wheel. I disassemble it and use some solvent and clean out all the old grease and dirt from the entire unit. Then I lubricate it with white Lithium grease and reinstall it when I reinstall the wheel.

I do the exact same thing.
