Fuel Pump Output

Post by filupsd »

I know this is part of a larger topic and I have read through several of the threads on Prelude fuel pumps. I replaced my fuel pump a couple of years ago with one from a 1985 prelude. Since then my mileage plummeted to 25MPG. I started checking specs for the OEM Goldwing pump vs the Prelude pump. According to the service manual, the OEM pumps about 16.9 oz per minute or 7.9 gal./hour. The prelude specs are 25gal/hour so I'm pushing too much fuel Right?

How do I regulate the fuel from this pump?

It's not the flow, it's the pressure. As long as the replacement pump doesn't put out more pressure than the original, it will be fine. If there's more, the pressure will lift the float needle off the seat and flood out. I don't recall the specs, but the Prelude pump is supposed to be comparable to the GW pump--about 3 or 3.5 lbs. You could measure it, if you could find a low enough pressure gauge.
