Rain shut down my bike.

Post by Chompper26 »

I got stranded tonight on my way to work and had to call a tow. The bike was running fine till i hit some heavy rain. Then it lost power and finally shut down completely. After 2hrs under cover it would start but ran horribly so i called a tow truck. The engine is making a chunking noise like not all its cylinders are actually firing. Just wondering what the water could have gotten to that would cause this.

Check your plugs and if there is water staying in the recess - there should be a drain hole which lets water build up drain out - if blocked it could be your problem. Also your plug leads could have shorted out or coils got damp - but I would say more than likely plug caps and leads are the issue.

Clean out the plug well drains as mentioned, and I would then start the bike up at night, then take a mister filled with water and start spraying in and around the engine - particularly the coils and spark plug wires. If you have a crack in a coil or plug wire, you'll start seeing sparks at the location of the problem.. You might need to rev the engine up to generate enough voltage to see the sparks.
