Intercom not working

I just got my 1984 aspencade yesterday and it has one headset with it. I thought I read that once the headset was connected the radion would play through it. I connected the headset and nothing happens. Am I missing something or am I completely mistaken?

not quite, there is a button on the radio which toggles between the headset and the speakers.
